CHAPTER: EZEKIEL 46

DEVOTION: The people of Israel were to come to the Temple on Saturday or the Sabbath to worship the LORD. This was to be a weekly event for them. They were to come and then go home in the evening. They were to bring sacrifices with them for the LORD. Also other places in the Bible inform us that they came to these weekly events singing as they came.

The Prince, seems to be the leader of the people that bring them to a time of worship of the LORD during the Millennial kingdom. We might not understand who he is or the purpose of the worship during this time period but it is something that the Word of God teaches regarding the future. All believers will be worshiping the LORD JESUS CHRIST during this time period.

Today we are commanded to go to church each Sunday to celebrate the resurrection of Jesus Christ. HE died on the cross and three days later HE was resurrected from the dead.

When we enter a church that preaches the Bible, we should come prepared to worship the LORD through our singing, fellowship and our giving. Our singing should be presenting a joyful noise before the LORD if our singing voice is not good like mine. There are those who have good singing voices that make the worship service so much better. If those who can sing just watch as others sing it is not a good worship service to the LORD. I have witnessed many individuals who do not sing in worship services. This takes away from the congregation and themselves in their worship of the LORD. God wants us to sing praises no matter what our ability is in this regard.

The singing helps the pastor present the message from the LORD. If it is no so good it gives him a rough start to his message. But if is good singing it will lift his heart to know that people came prepared to worship.

Also there is a time of giving in each service. The children of Israel brought animal sacrifices for the priests to prepare before the LORD. We bring our tithes and offerings to the LORD each time we are paid to show our thanks to the LORD for his provision of salvation and for the ability to work.

There is a fellowship aspect to our worship. Before the service and after the service we should be encouraging one another through a hand shake and conversation. We need to ask each other how we can pray for them during the week. Also if there are those who are discouraged we can try to encourage them before they reenter the world.

If we come to worship the LORD in these three ways we can return home with joy in our heart from our singing HIS praises, hearing the preaching of the Word of God  and encouraging the brethren. We can thank the LORD for our instruction and with the knowledge that we have given a sacrificial gift to the LORD.

CHALLENGE:  Participation is necessary for true worship to the LORD. Sitting in a pew and doing nothing is not worship.

DAILY SPIRITUAL LUNCH: Transitional Believers

: 3        Likewise the people of the land shall worship at the door of this gate before the LORD in the Sabbaths and in the new moons. (7812 “worship” [shachah] means bow down, obeisance, reverence, prostrate oneself, act of respect or honor, or allegiance to a deity.)

DEVOTION:  Ezekiel continued to receive instructions regarding what the children of Israel were to do in the future. They had not been good in their service to the LORD throughout their history but now it was expected to change.

It seems that someone who loved the LORD wouldn’t have any trouble bowing down before HIM in a time when they should be honoring the LORD for all the gifts HE has given them.

One of the problems is that people like to look at other people and compare their worship to them. This can cause people to not be involved in the time in church when everyone gathers to learn from the Word of God.

The children of Israel came on Saturday to reverence HIM. They were to do no work on that day. They were not to travel very far to give HIM honor on Saturday. They were not to cook on Saturday. The only activity of the day was to spend time with the LORD.

Today we do a lot of things on Sunday. We watch sports. We go shopping. Our children are busy will all kinds of sports activities. It is not a day of rest as it was designated in the Old Testament.

We don’t come together today on Saturday but on Sunday to remember the resurrection of Jesus Christ. It is all different. We are too busy. Sometimes even church can be too busy and there is not time to quietly spend a time of silence before the LORD. Too often everyone is in conversation before the serve, sometimes during the service and definitely after the service. Quiet times with God on Sunday can be rare but they can happen.

CHALLENGE: Before church this Sunday bow your head and quiet your heart before you listen to the message from the Word of God. You can even read a passage of Scripture while you are waiting for the service to begin.

DAILY SPIRITUAL SUPPER: Mature Believers

: 12      Now when the prince shall prepare a voluntary burnt offering or peace offerings voluntarily unto the LORD, one shall then open him the gate that looks toward the east, and he shall prepare his burnt offering and his peace offerings, as he did on the sabbath day: then he shall go forth; and after his going forth one shall shut the gate. (5071 “voluntary” [nadabah] means free motivation, a voluntary offering made to the God of Israel, whether of sacrifices or produce or other objects, free-will, free inclination, or free-will offering)

DEVOTION:  The prince was to set an example in front of the people as to what was expected of them if they were to genuinely worship the LORD.

Leaders have to set the example to be followed if those who are watching them are to see what needs to be done. If the leaders of the people of Israel were not worshiping the LORD, then the people would follow their example of not honoring the LORD with their lives and sacrifices.

This doesn’t mean that if the prince didn’t worship the LORD properly that they had an excuse to not worship the LORD. It was just good for them to see a good example to follow from those in leadership.

We are all held accountable to the LORD for our own actions, just like each member of the children of Israel has to stand before the LORD for their actions. Leaders are held in a higher regard because they are supposed to give a good example to those who are under their leadership.

Leaders have to answer for their actions because they can lead the people away from the LORD instead of closer to the LORD. Every leader has to confess their sin and ask the LORD for forgiveness and then lead by example again before the people.

Many times, the LORD judged the leaders in front of the people to show that they were held to higher standard.

CHALLENGE: If we want to be leaders, we have to confess our sins and ask the LORD to give us the strength to continue to worship HIM in spirit and in truth in front of others to help them see what is necessary in true worship.

____________________________________________________

: 13      You shall daily prepare a burnt offering unto the LORD of a lamb of the first year without blemish: thou shalt prepare it every morning.

(3117 “daily” [yowm] means time, period, 24 hours, or year.)

DEVOTION:  During this time period there was to be an, every morning sacrifice given by the people and the prince. These morning sacrifices, are described in detail in this chapter. They were always to be given to the LORD. They were always to be without blemish. Every detail is important to the LORD to explain to Ezekiel how worship was to be conducted.

The prince was the only one to enter by the east gate and exit by the same. The people were to come in one gate and leave in the opposite direction. The priests were to prepare the sacrifices according to the instructions given. The LORD is a God of detail. Nothing is left to guess work. Too often when the children of Israel played with the guidelines the LORD gave it always got them in trouble.

Every detail of our worship is important to the LORD. HE gives us special instructions regarding our sacrifices that we are to offer to HIM on a daily basis.

We are to offer sacrifices of our bodies, praise, and thanksgiving to mention a few. We are to present our bodies as living sacrifices daily. We are to daily take up our cross and follow the LORD. We are to keep short accounts with the LORD. The Old Testament informs us that the LORD’S mercies are new every morning.

Are we every morning offering the LORD our bodies as living sacrifices? Are we every morning offering praise to the LORD? Are we every morning offering thanksgiving to the LORD?

Only we can answer these questions. Each day is a new day with the LORD. Each day we receive new mercies from the LORD. Are we giving mercy to those around us each day? Do we expect the LORD to give us mercy when we don’t give it to others? Remember our responsibility is to forgive and encourage those around us daily!!!

CHALLENGE: Daily talks with someone regarding your personal walk with the LORD for one week and see what it does to your times alone with the LORD.

QUOTES regarding passage

46:1–8 The Sabbath and the observance of the new moon would be part of the worship ritual during the Millennium. It may seem incongruous that the Sabbaths the sign of the Mosaic covenant (cf. Exod 31:13, 16–17), would be observed in the millennial kingdom when it is not observed during the church age under the new covenant. Is this a retrogression in God’s purposes? Not if it is understood that all God’s covenants would be fulfilled and operating in the messianic kingdom (if 37:15–28). The Mosaic covenant would find its fruition in the messianic kingdom in that Israel finally would be God’s people and he would be their God in a relationship that was to exist under the Mosaic covenant. That the pictorial sacrifices had their reality in the work of Christ does not nullify the relationship of Mosaic covenant that is a holy one. The Mosaic covenant showed Israel how to live a holy life in a relationship with God, and that type of life is still valid under the new covenant (cf. Jer 31:33–34; Rom 8:4). Therefore, for the Mosaic covenant and the new covenant to be fulfilled side by side is not incongruous. Ezekiel, however, was looking at the situation only from his perspective under the Mosaic covenant.

Just as work was to be done for six days and on the Sabbath the Israelite was to rest, so for six days the inner court’s east gate would remain closed but on the Sabbath it would be open for worship (vv.1, 2c). On the Sabbath the prince would lead again his people in worship. He would enter the inner court’s east gate and stand by the gate post, enjoying a position not possessed by the people (v.2a). Though the specific post was not clear, it would seem likely that it would be the doorjamb of the portico since the tables for the slaughter of offerings were in the portico. Here the prince would bring his burnt offerings and fellowship offerings that would be sacrificed by the priests, since he could not enter into the inner court (v.2b; cf. Num 29:38). The burnt offering would consist of six male lambs and a ram, all without defect, and each accompanied by a grain offering composed of one ephah of flour for the ram but as much as desired for the lambs. One hin of oil was to be mixed with each ephah of flour (v.5; cf. Num 28:9–10). The makeup of the fellowship (thanksgiving) offering was not stated, since it was normally a freewill offering of whatever the offerer chose to bring. The prince would worship at the gate’s inner threshold and then return in the same way that he entered (vv.2c, 8). He would not enter the inner court. The people would worship at the east gate in the Lord’s presence as the prince performed these sacrifices and worshiped within the gate (v.3). (Alexander, R. H. (1986). Ezekiel. In F. E. Gaebelein (Ed.), The Expositor’s Bible Commentary: Isaiah, Jeremiah, Lamentations, Ezekiel (Vol. 6, p. 986). Grand Rapids, MI: Zondervan Publishing House.)

When the millennial temple is discussed, the question is frequently asked, “Since Jesus has died for the sins of the world, fulfilled the law, and brought in the New Covenant, why would believing Jews want to return to the Old Covenant? What need is there to go back to animal sacrifices when Jesus has made one perfect offering for all time?” This is one of the major arguments used by some students against taking Ezekiel 40–48 literally. But if we understand the role of the sacrifices under the Old Covenant, it will help us see their significance in the millennial temple.

The sacrifices mentioned in this section of Ezekiel are: the burnt offering (40:38–39, 42; 43:18, 24, 27; 44:11; 45:15, 17, 23, 25; 46:2, 4, 12, 13, 15); the trespass or guilt offering (40:39; 42:13; 44:29; 46:20); the sin offering (40:39; 42:13; 43:19, 21, 22, 25; 44:27, 29; 45:17, 19, 22; 23, 25; 46:20); the peace or fellowship offering (43:27; 45:15, 17; 46:2, 12); the meal (grain) offering (42:13; 44:29; 45:15, 17, 24, 25; 46:5, 7, 11, 14, 15, 20); and the drink offering (45:17). For the Mosaic regulations for these offerings, see Leviticus 1–7.

The burnt offering speaks of total dedication to the Lord, “all on the altar” (1:9; Rom. 12:1–2). The sin offering (Lev. 4; 6:21–30) and the tresspass or guilt offering (Lev. 5; 7:1–10) deal with the sinner’s offenses against God and people. The sin offering was brought by those who sinned through ignorance, for there was no sacrifice available for high-handed deliberate sin (Num. 15:30–36; Ps. 51:1, 11, 16–17). The trespass offering dealt with offenses for which some kind of restitution should be made. The offerer was required to restore the amount of the property plus a fine of about 20 percent of its value. Sin is not a cheap thing—nor is God’s forgiveness!

The peace or fellowship offering (Lev. 3; 7:11–38) was an expression of praise and thanksgiving or perhaps as the indication of the completion of a special vow to the Lord. Part of the meat from the sacrifice was given to the worshiper, who could cook it and enjoy a feast with family and friends. Except for weddings and other high occasions, the Jewish people rarely killed their animals just to have a meal. Meat was an occasional luxury. Thus, the fellowship offering was an occasion for worshiping the Lord and enjoyment with His people. The grain or meal offering involved presenting sheaves, the roasted kernels of grain, fine flour, or various kinds of baked cakes. It was the acknowledgment that God is the source of the food that sustains life (1 Chron. 29:10–14). The drink offering was a portion of wine that was poured out along with another sacrifice. It symbolized life poured out wholly to the Lord (Phil. 2:17).

All of these offerings in some way pointed to Christ and His sacrifice of Himself for our sins (Heb. 10:1–18). God forgave the sins of the worshipers if they brought the sacrifice by faith and trusted the Lord, because the blood of animals can never remove the guilt of human sin (v. 4). God’s forgiveness was declared (Lev. 4:20, 26, 31, 35; 5:10, 13, 16, 18; 6:7), but only because of the work of Jesus Christ which was pictured by the sacrifice. Old Testament believers weren’t forgiven because animals died, but because they put their faith in the Lord (Heb. 11; Ps. 51:16–17; Hab. 2:4). Therefore, the use of animal sacrifices in the millennial temple no more minimizes or negates the finished work of Christ than these sacrifices did before Jesus died. It appears that the sacrifices will be offered in a memorial sense and as expressions of love and devotion to the Lord (Isa. 56:5–7; 60:7). They will also bring people together for fellowship and feasting to the glory of the Lord. (Wiersbe, W. W. (2000). Be reverent (pp. 191–193). Colorado Springs, CO: Chariot Victor/Cook Communications.)

God provided for fellowship between himself and human beings. He also provided for interaction between humans and incorporated it as a vital part of worship.

Proper worship includes good social interaction and interpersonal relationships as well as person-to-God relationships. The temple service in the millennium will allow one to eat of the good things of God and share in a time of fellowship as well as worship (46:19–24). (Cooper, L. E. (1994). Vol. 17: Ezekiel. The New American Commentary (405–406). Nashville: Broadman & Holman Publishers.)

46:11–15. If the prince desires to make a freewill offering to the Lord … the gate facing east is to be opened for him. The regulation concerning the closing of the east gate to the inner court (cf. v. 1) will be suspended for this special offering. But after the prince leaves, the gate is to be closed again. Then Ezekiel mentioned the morning sacrifice, but not the evening sacrifice (cf. Ex. 29:38–41). This omission could be explained by the fact that he was giving only the highlights of the sacrificial system. So by listing the morning sacrifices he may have assumed that his readers would apply the same regulations to the evening sacrifice. (Dyer, C. H. (1985). Ezekiel. In J. F. Walvoord & R. B. Zuck (Eds.), The Bible Knowledge Commentary: An Exposition of the Scriptures (Vol. 1, p. 1312). Wheaton, IL: Victor Books)

Ver. 12. Now when the prince shall prepare a voluntary burnt-offering, or peace-offerings voluntarily unto the Lord, &c.] That is, on week-days, distinct from sabbath-days, new moons, feasts, and solemnities, of which before; and seems to have respect to week-day lectures, in distinction from the weekly and monthly stated times, for the ministry of the word and administration of the Lord’s supper; in which lectures the principal thing insisted on must be the atoning sacrifice of Christ, and peace and reconciliation made by his blood; for the Gospel, which is to be preached in season and out of season, is the ministry of reconciliation, or the word preaching peace by Jesus Christ; and which should at all times be held forth to the faith of God’s people; which is meant by the preparation of these offerings: and being voluntary ones shew not only that Christ’s sacrifice was a willing one, and offered without any reluctance, with all readiness and cheerfulness; but also that week-day lectures are voluntary things, which men are not under necessary obligation to attend unto, either ministers or people, but is a matter of free choice, as their circumstances will admit; and yet are acceptable to God, and agreeable to the will of Christ, the Prince, said to prepare these free-will offerings: one shall then open him the gate that looketh toward the east; the place where he stood and worshipped on the sabbath-day; on the evening of which it was shut, and remained so the six days of the week, ver. 1, 2. only when it was the prince’s pleasure to offer a sacrifice, or to have the word preached, it was opened by one of the porters of the gates; or there was an open exercise of the ministry of the word, by one of the preachers of it: and he shall prepare his burnt-offerings, and his peace-offerings, as he did on the sabbath-day; the same doctrine, respecting the sacrifice and satisfaction of Christ, must be delivered at such times, as on Lord’s days: then he shall go forth; and after his going forth one shall shut the gate; on the sabbath-day, or the Lord’s day, it was not to be shut till the evening, because that day is wholly to be devoted to the service of God; men are not to find their own ways, nor do their own work, nor seek their own pleasure; but on week-days, when the lecture is over, the gate is shut immediately, and persons may return to their worldly business directly. Ver. 12. “The prince shall prepare a voluntary burnt-offering.” Not only is he to perform official acts of worship on holy days and feasts, but in voluntary offerings daily he is to show his individual zeal, surpassing all his people in liberality, and so setting them a princely example. FROM MY READING:

1 Kings 17
After Elijah prophesies drought, the Lord hides him and later uses him to heal a child.
INSIGHT

Drought is a devastating natural disaster, and when it comes to the children of Israel, it does not come by accident. It is always divine judgment. From the beginning of his reign, Ahab, who is king when Elijah begins his ministry, violates the Lord’s name. He encourages idolatry and the worship of Baal, a pagan god. He “did evil in the sight of the Lord, more than all who were before him” (1 Kings 16:30). Elijah’s name means “Jehovah is my strength,” and the Lord sets about to prove the significance of Elijah’s name as He brings judgment on Israel and destroys the worshipers of Baal. (Quiet Walk)

OBSTACLES OF REVIVAL

But though we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel unto you than that which we have preached unto you, let him be accursed. Galatians 1:8
Recently, a speaker was about to give an address on a certain religious book which had achieved some notoriety, and he prefaced his remarks by saying something like this. “Now I am going to criticize this book, but I must say this. A friend of mine who saw this man on television said to me, ‘If ever I have looked at a born-again man there he was.'”
You see, he was suggesting that what is said in the book does not matter! Though the writer denies the teaching of the Scripture and the creeds of his church, though he denies the being of God, the deity of Christ, and all the essentials of Christianity, in spite of that, what is being put first is our subjective feeling “The man looks to me to be a born again man.” So in spite of what he says in his book, “I therefore have a feeling, somehow, that the man is all right after all”!
Now that is the kind of thing that is being said at the present time: “It does not matter what people may teach. Though they may deny the very essence of Christianity, if I like them, if I am attracted to them, if I can talk easily to them, then that is what counts.”
You can tell whether a man is preaching the gospel or not, or whether he believes the gospel or not, by what he says! It does not matter what he is in his appearance or in his personality…what does he say? Is it the gospel, or something that is passing as gospel, which is not the gospel?
Then Paul makes it still more explicit: “But though we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel unto you than that which we have preached unto you, let him be accursed” [v. 8]. Could anything be plainer or stronger?
A Thought to Ponder: You can tell whether a man believes the gospel or not, by what he says! (From Saving Faith, a sermon on Romans 10:3 by Martyn Lloyd-Jones)

O How He Loves You and Me
“That ye . . . may be able to comprehend with all saints what is the breadth, and length, and depth, and height; And to know the love of Christ, which passeth knowledge, that ye might be filled with all the fulness of God.” (Ephesians 3:17-19)
The theme of the inspiring hymn “O the Deep, Deep Love of Jesus” is the infinite love Christ displayed for us through His gracious life, sacrificial death, and victorious resurrection from the grave, followed by His present ministry on our behalf. O the deep, deep love of Jesus, spread His praise from shore to shore!
How He loveth, ever loveth, changeth never, nevermore!
How He watches o’er His loved ones, died to call them all His own;
How for them He intercedeth, watcheth o’er them from the throne!
His love cannot be earned but was freely extended to us. Even greater than that, it was given when we were sinners by choice and nature. “God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us” (Romans 5:8).
His love for us never fails and never changes: “Jesus Christ the same yesterday, and today, and forever” (Hebrews 13:8). He was willing to die so that our death penalty would be paid and to adopt us into His family. Even now He rejoices over us. “The LORD thy God in the midst of thee is mighty; he will save, he will rejoice over thee with joy; he will rest in his love, he will joy over thee with singing” (Zephaniah 3:17).
He now oversees us from His place at the right hand of His Father, making intercession for us. “Wherefore he is able also to save them to the uttermost that come unto God by him, seeing he ever liveth to make intercession for them” (Hebrews 7:25). Such love is deep indeed.
