COMMENTARY:

DAILY SPIRITUAL BREAKFAST: Young Believers

: 1      Masters, give to your servants that which is just and equal, knowing that you also have a Master in heaven. (2471 “equal” [isotes] means likeness, fairness, or the quality of being the same in quantity or measure or value or status)

DEVOTION: In today’s language these individuals would be employers of individuals. They would be called “boss.” They would be the ones who evaluate others who are under their leadership.

Christians who are in such positions are not to be too harsh or to lazy. They are to be individuals who treat those under them with dignity. They are to care for those who are there to do a service to the company.

Here we see that they are to be just and fair. They are to keep a standard that is righteous. They are to make sure that everyone understands how important it is to get a job done properly. In the process they are to make sure that the door of communication is open.

Each person who is given a responsibility over another person has to answer to the LORD. The LORD will give the final judgment on whether someone was a good “boss” or not.

So when we have others working with us we need to be sure that we recognize who we are ultimately going to answer to for our actions. Employees will answer to the LORD. Employers will answer to the LORD.

Treat everyone the way you would like to be treated. Treat everyone the way the LORD would have you treat them. HE will reward us for faithful leadership in the work place.

DAILY SPIRITUAL LUNCH: Transitional Believers

: 6      Let your speech be always with grace, seasoned with salt, that you may know how you ought to answer every man. (5485 “grace” [charis] means to show kindness, good will, mercy, thankfulness, favor, or agreeableness)

DEVOTION:  Our life has to be one that looks pleasing to the LORD from heaven and here on earth. When people look at us will they see someone who is full of grace? What does that mean?

To be a gracious person means that you treat all people with genuine respect. You are kind to all those you meet. You are willing to give people the benefit of doubt regarding where they are with the LORD.

Also Paul instructs every believer to be attractive. Does that mean that everyone who serves the LORD will win a beauty contest? No!! There is an inner beauty that can be seen by people. This needs to be manifested toward those who need our ministry. There is genuineness to those who want people to listen to the message of the gospel.

People know when someone genuinely cares about them and where they are going to spend eternity. We need to approach people in a manner that shows them a genuine concern for their eternal state.

When this happens people respond to the message of the gospel because they see something real in you. Be real to people.

CHALLENGE:  Are you gracious and attractive to those around you? If not, ask the LORD to change you to allow people to see Christ in you the hope of glory.

DAILY SPIRITUAL SUPPER: Mature Believers

: 12      Epaphras, who is one of you, a servant of Christ, salutes you, always laboring fervently for you in prayers, that you many stand perfect and complete in all the will of God. (75 “laboring” [agonizomai] means to compete for a prize, to contend with an adversary, endeavor to accomplish something, to wrestle earnestly in prayer, fight, or strive)

DEVOTION:  This is the end of this letter to the church at Colosse. Paul usually ends each epistle or letter with commendation and greetings to church from those they know that are with him in Rome. These are individuals who are able to minister to him while he is under arrest. They were individuals who encouraged him. They were individuals who supported him while he was under arrest. He was very thankful for them.

Each individual is serving the LORD well in the area where Paul needed them. Here is a man who prayed for his friends. He prayed for their standing with God. He wanted all his friends to be in the will of God. He is fighting for his fellow believers in his prayer life. This is not easy prayer. This is a prayer warrior. This is prayer warrior that means business with God for the glory of God. He wants two things to happen in the lives of his fellow believers.

He wants them to be stand fast in the LORD. This only comes through the study of the Word of God and confession of sin. He wants them to be mature in the faith. He wants them to without blemish in their work for the LORD. This is dealing with their personal relationship with the LORD. They need to be Spirit filled individuals.

Secondly, he wants them to be bent on fulfilling the will of God for their life. Each person has a personal ministry for the LORD. This ministry is ordained by the LORD for them to do. This also comes through the study of the Word of God with the ministry of the Holy Spirit active in helping them understand the Word and their life work for the LORD.

Are we endeavoring to see our friends in the will of God? Do we want them in the perfect and complete will of God? How much do we really love our friends?

We ask each one receiving these devotions to divide their friends by their last name and pray for them on a given day of the month. On the first we ask each one to pray for the “A’s” on their list. Then on the second day of the month we are to pray for the “B’s” on their list and so on. Our world is made up of those in it that we know and we have the responsibility to pray for them. Remember to pray. Thanks. Please remember to pray for our ministry as it comes to mind. Thanks again.

CHALLENGE:  Keep your prayer life active. It is through the prayers of the saints that any ministry moves forward. We should also be praying for revival in our church and area. God is not finished with our nation yet. Prayer needs to be effectual and fervent.

: 17      And say to Archippus, take heed to the ministry which you have received in the Lord, that you fulfil it. (1248 “ministry” [diakonia] means service, provision, waiting upon, contribution, help, mission, attendance on a duty, or aid.)

DEVOTION:  Every believer has a mission to reach their family for the LORD. That can only be done with proper service to the LORD. Too often people look outside their home first to serve the LORD.

Those who take the leadership in the church are given the responsibility to have their family under control. If the leaders of the church don’t have children that are faithful to the LORD it is hard to train others. Pastors have to reach their children for the LORD first. They have to have a wife who loves to serve the LORD as well. Leading a church takes both a husband and wife who love the LORD and who faithfully work with their children to follow the LORD as well. Sometimes when the children grow up they can rebel against the LORD but that doesn’t mean that pastors ever give up on their children becoming true believers in the LORD.

Here we have a man by the name of Archippus who has been given a type of service to the LORD that he is asked to fulfil it. Not everyone is a pastor but everyone has a gift given to them at the point of salvation to be used to advance the kingdom of God in the local church. Every position in a local church is a place to help those around them in the use of the gift. Those who prepare meals are serving the LORD. Those who are cleaning the church are serving the LORD. Those who are ushering are serving the LORD. Faithfulness in what some consider unimportant places of service is really very important to the work of the church. No one should be overlooked in their service to the LORD. There should be a meal to those show who serve the LORD faithfully every year to encourage others to serve the LORD.

God is going to have an awards dinner when we enter eternity for those who have been “good and faithful servants.” We should remember to do one yearly to encourage those who think they are doing thankless ministries. They are behind the scene but very much being seen by the LORD.

CHALLENGE: Understand that some places of service don’t receive as much recognition here on this earth but heaven is watching and the real recognition is given at the Judgment seat of Christ. Carry out YOUR service to the LORD!!!

:18      The salutation by the hand of me Paul. Remember my bonds. Grace be with you. Amen.(1199 “bonds” [desmos] means a band or bond. [Strong, J. (1995). Enhanced Strong’s Lexicon. Woodside Bible Fellowship].)

DEVOTION:  Paul makes it clear that he is writing this letter while being imprisoned in Rome.  This was the result of his appealing to Caesar after being imprisoned in Caesarea for two years.  Paul’s attitude is that his imprisonment is the ministry that God has called him to at this point in his life.

What would you do if you were thrown into jail or a labor camp for your faith?  There are fellow brothers and sisters from many parts of the world that are undergoing this at the present time.  They want us to be faithful to remember them in prayer, and the Lord to help them in their circumstances to be faithful to Him and steadfast in the faith.  In fact, we are told to remember those who are in prison (Hebrews 13:3).  That is, that we should be consistently praying for them and seeking to encourage them if possible.

We are used to a comfortable form of Christianity, but in one country new believers are warned about the suffering they will undergo before they are allowed to say that they have become true believers.  What if such persecution comes to this country?  There are many who think that such a thing is likely in the future here.  In fact, a recent movie talks about how a school teacher is sued for simply mentioning the Bible in her classroom.

Therefore, we need to always remember that true Christianity will be persecuted, and that we need to be a part of the international body of the persecuted church.  We should be preparing for persecution now by developing habits of a deep Christian life that will help us persevere after persecution comes.

CHALLENGE:  Find out something about the persecuted church.  The day of prayer for the persecuted church is November 6.  Plan to challenge those in your church to pray for those who are suffering for their faith, and then get involved! (Dr. Marc Wooten)

QUOTES regarding passage

Take heed (βλεπε [blepe]). Keep an eye on. Thou hast received in the Lord (παρελαβες ἐν Κυριῳ [parelabes en Kuriōi]). Second aorist active indicative of παραλαμβανω [paralambanō], the verb used by Paul of getting his message from the Lord (1 Cor. 15:3). Clearly Archippus had a call “in the Lord” as every preacher should have. That thou fulfil it (ἱνα αὐτην πληροις [hina autēn plērois]). Present active subjunctive of πληροω [plēroō], “that thou keep on filling it full.” It is a life-time job. (Robertson, A. T. (1933). Word Pictures in the New Testament (Col 4:17). Nashville, TN: Broadman Press.)

4:17. Archippus, probably the son of Philemon (cf. Phile. 2), was ministering in Colosse, possibly in Epaphras’ absence. Paul exhorted his readers to tell Archippus to see to (blepe, “look out” for dangers in) it that he complete the work (lit., “the ministry”) God had given him. Whatever his problem, he was not fulfilling (completing) his work. This was another example of Paul’s concern that the Colossians be complete in Christ. (Geisler, N. L. (1985). Colossians. In J. F. Walvoord & R. B. Zuck (Eds.), The Bible Knowledge Commentary: An Exposition of the Scriptures (Vol. 2, p. 685). Wheaton, IL: Victor Books.)

Paul’s last words before his salutation are directed at Archippus as an encouragement to continue faithfully in his ministry. Was Archippus discouraged? Had the gnostic false teachers invaded his church and created problems for him? We do not know. But we do know that pastors of local churches face many problems and carry many burdens, and they often need a word of encouragement.

Paul reminded Archippus that his ministry was a gift from God, and that he was a steward of God who would one day have to give an account of his work. Since the Lord gave him his ministry, the Lord could also help him carry it out in the right way. Ministry is not something we do for God; it is something God does in and through us.

The word fulfill carries with it the idea that God has definite purposes for His servants to accomplish. He works in us and through us to complete those good works that He has prepared for us (see Eph. 2:10). Of course, fulfill also parallels the theme of Colossians—the fullness of Jesus Christ available to each believer. We are able to fulfill our ministries because we have been “filled full” through Jesus Christ.

Unless we make a practical application of Bible doctrine, our study is in vain. After reading this letter and studying it, we cannot help but see that we have in Jesus Christ all that we can ever want or need. All of God’s fullness is in Jesus Christ and we have been made complete in Him. What an encouragement this must have been to Archippus! What an encouragement it should be to us today! (Wiersbe, W. W. (1996). The Bible exposition commentary (Vol. 2, p. 153). Wheaton, IL: Victor Books.)

In verse 17 Paul gives a special admonition to Archippus, also mentioned in the letter to Philemon, who was apparently a servant of Christ ministering the Word at Colosse, but had a tendency not uncommon in some young preachers to settle down comfortably and take things easily. To him the apostle sends the message, “Take heed to the ministry which thou hast received in the Lord that thou fulfil it.” Promptness and energy are as important in spiritual service as in anything else. There is an incident related in connection with two leading generals of the Southern Confederacy of America that might well speak to every servant of Christ. General Robt. E. Lee once sent word to General Stonewall Jackson that he would be glad to talk with him at his convenience on some matter of no great urgency. General Jackson instantly rode to Headquarters, through most inclement weather. When General Lee expressed surprise at seeing him, Jackson exclaimed, “General Lee’s slightest wish is a supreme command to me, and I always take pleasure in prompt obedience.” It is to be hoped that this same spirit laid hold of Archippus, and that he profited by the prodding of the aged apostle. (Ironside, H. A. (1929). Lectures on the Epistle to the Colossians. (pp. 184–185). Neptune, NJ: Loizeaux Brothers)

Ver. 17. And say to Archippus, &c.] A name common among the Grecians. This person the apostle calls his fellow-soldier, in Philem. ver. 2 and who was now the minister of the Gospel at Colosse, his fellow-minister, or co-pastor Epaphras, being at Rome, and a prisoner there; though by some he is said to be the first bishop of the Laodiceans, but it seems most likely that he now resided at Colosse, and was their minister: who being negligent in his office, they are called upon to say unto him, take heed to the ministry which thou hast received in the Lord, that thou fulfil it. The ministry he had, was not that of the office of a deacon, as some have thought, but of a preacher of the word; and this he had received gifts for, and was called unto it, and installed in it; and that in, and by the Lord himself, and to whom he was accountable for it: and therefore it was incumbent on him to fulfil it; by constantly preaching the word, and faithfully administering the ordinances; by defending truth, detecting error, reproving vice, visiting the sick, and comforting the feeble-minded; taking heed in all things to himself and doctrine, that he feed the whole flock of God with wholesome food; and, as a wise and faithful steward, give to every one their portion of meat in due season: hence it appears, that when ministers are negligent in the discharge of their duty, the church has a power to admonish and exhort them to a diligent performance of it. (Gill, J. (1809). An Exposition of the New Testament (Vol. 3, pp. 211–212). London: Mathews and Leigh.)

FROM MY READING:

(Remember the only author that I totally agree with is the HOLY SPIRIT in the inerrant WORD OF GOD called THE BIBLE! All other I try to gleam what I can to help me grow in the LORD!!)

Survey Finds Most American Christians Are Actually Heretics

A survey of 3,000 people conducted by LifeWay Research and commissioned by Ligonier Ministries found that although Americans still overwhelmingly identify as “Christian,” startling percentages of the nation embrace ancient errors condemned by all major Christian traditions. These are not minor points of doctrine, but core ideas that define Christianity itself. The really sad part? Even when we’re denying the divinity of Christ, we can’t keep our story straight. Americans talking about theology sound about as competent as country singers rapping.…

Seventy percent of participants—who ranged across socioeconomic and racial backgrounds—agreed there’s only one true God. Yet sixty-four percent also thought this God accepts the worship of all religions, including those that believe in many gods.….

A full 60 percent agreed that “everyone eventually goes to heaven,” but half of those surveyed also checked the box saying that “only those who believe in Jesus will be saved.” So either these folks are saying everyone will eventually believe in Jesus, or they hired a monkey to take the survey for them.….

Everyone expected them to perform better than most Americans. No one expected them to perform worse. Seven in ten evangelicals—more than the population at large—said that Jesus was the first being God created. Fifty-six percent agreed that “the Holy Spirit is a divine force but not a personal being.” They also saw a huge increase in evangelicals (28 percent, up from 9 percent) who indicated that the Third Person of the Trinity is not equal with God the Father or Jesus, a direct contradiction of orthodox Christianity. The Holy Spirit is, of course, used to being overlooked. But sources say he seemed bummed about these results.…

As before, it’s really the contradictory answers, not the outright heresies, that should most concern us. By definition, the evangelicals in this survey believed that “only those who trust in Jesus Christ alone as their Savior receive God’s free gift of eternal salvation.” Yet nearly half agreed that “God accepts the worship of all religions including Christianity, Judaism, and Islam.”….

But could it also have something to do with the fact that two out of five evangelicals say “worshipping alone or with family is a valid replacement for regularly attending church”? Come to think of it, should we marvel that so many Christians shrug off church when so few congregations teach the foundational doctrines of the faith, or even delve very deeply into the book from which those doctrines come?…

Why does it matter that we’ve become a nation of doctrinal dunces? What harm is there in flunking Christianity 101? Well, for Christians, the answer is obvious. If we really believe what we profess—that the incarnation, life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ is the single most important fact of history and eternity—then we’d better improve our grade. Knowing who the God we claim to worship is can no longer be a third priority if we want the world to take us seriously as his followers.

Luke 7

Jesus helps the people understand the significance of John the Baptist and his ministry.

INSIGHT

“Don’t confuse me with the facts; my mind is made up!”

Sometimes unbelief can’t be shown enough proof of God and His Word. No matter how much evidence is compiled, if a person refuses to believe, nothing will convince him. The scribes and Pharisees have already rejected God before Jesus or John ever came on the scene. That is why they reject John when he comes preaching a message of preparation for the Messiah and for Jesus when He comes.

We must know in order to believe, yet we must also believe in order to know. Many truths in the Bible may puzzle us. To begin mastering them, we must first rest completely in the character and power of almighty God (Quiet Walk)

Cities Set on a Hill
“Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid.” (Matthew 5:14)
Cities in ancient times were often built on a hill, and this was especially important for those six cities in Israel that had been designated as cities of refuge. They were located, geographically, so that no one in Israel was more than a day’s journey from one of them—accessible to all who might need to flee to one for refuge some day. These were designated as havens, “that the slayer that killeth any person unawares and unwittingly may flee thither: and they shall be your refuge from the avenger of blood” (Joshua 20:3).
“And they appointed Kedesh in Galilee in mount Naphtali, and Shechem in mount Ephraim, and Kirjatharba, which is Hebron, in the mountain of Judah. And on the other side Jordan by Jericho eastward, they assigned Bezer in the wilderness upon the plain out of the tribe of Reuben, and Ramoth in Gilead out of the tribe of Gad, and Golan in Bashan out of the tribe of Manasseh” (Joshua 20:7-8). The first three cities are specifically said to be on mountains. On the east of Jordan, Ramoth was on Mount Gilead, Golan on the Golan Heights east of the Sea of Galilee, and Bezer apparently on the high tablelands east of the Dead Sea. Thus, all could be seen from a great distance, even at night, by its watch fires. Their strategic locations were a comfort to the accidental killer as he fled for his life from an avenger of blood.
The cities of refuge were a type of Christ, to whom we “have fled for refuge to lay hold upon the hope set before us” (Hebrews 6:18). He is, to us, a strong city set on a hill, ready to receive all who come to Him in faith. He called Himself “the light of the world” (John 8:12), but then He also said that those who now have His light must also serve as lights—as cities on a hill that those who see them may “glorify [their] Father which is in heaven” (Matthew 5:16). JUDAS ISCARIOT

…none of them is lost, but the son of perdition; that the scripture might be fulfilled.
John 17:12
If there is one thing in the Scriptures that proves more conclusively than anything else the absolute necessity of the rebirth, it is the case of Judas Iscariot. What differentiates the Christian from the non-Christian is not that the Christian lives a better life than he did before, nor that he knows more of the Scriptures and all these other good things. Judas knew all that, and he probably lived a good outward moral life during the three years he was among the disciples. What makes a man a Christian is that he is born again; he has received the divine nature; he has indeed become indwelt by the Spirit of the living God. It is this that gives understanding and everything that Judas did not have. It was because Judas was never renewed and given the new life that he remained “the son of perdition.”
And here I want to utter a solemn, terrible word. The end of the non-Christian, even though he may be highly religious, is perdition, which means perishing. Though Judas was in the company of the apostles all along, he really belonged to the world, and the fate of the world is to perish. Whatever its appearance may be, its end is destruction, with no hope whatsoever; because it has not truly believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God, it perishes.
This is an unpleasant subject, and yet we have to face it, because in the very center of this most wonderful prayer our Lord had to mention it as a solemn warning. He was not praying for Judas—He was praying for those who were God’s people, those who belong to God. My dear friends, are we certain that we belong to God? Do not rely upon anything but the certain knowledge that you have received life from God.
A Thought to Ponder: The end of the non-Christian, even though he may be highly religious, is perdition, which means perishing.
