Exodus 37

Bezaleel built Ark for Holy of Holies in Tabernacleverses 1-5

And Bezaleel made the ark of shittim wood

two cubits and a half was the length of it

a cubit and a half the breadth of it

and a cubit and a half the height of it

and he overlaid it with pure GOLD within and without

and made a crown of GOLD to it round about

and he cast for it four rings of GOLD

to be set by the four corners of it

even two rings on the one side of it

and two rings upon the other side of it

and he made staves of shittim wood

                        and overlaid them with GOLD

and he put the staves into the rings by the sides of the ark

                        to bear the ark

Bezaleel built Mercy Seat for Holy of Holiesverses 6-9

on the two ends of the mercy seat

One cherub on the end on this side

another cherub on the other end of that side

out of the mercy seat made he the cherubim

on the two ends thereof

And the cherubim spread out their wings on high

and covered with their wings over the mercy seat

with their faces one to another

Even to the mercy seat ward were the faces of the cherubim

Bezaleel built Table of shittim woodverses 10-16

two cubits was the length thereof

a cubit the breadth thereof

a cubit and a half the height thereof

and he overlaid it with pure GOLD

and made thereunto a crown of GOLD

round about

Also he made thereunto a border of an handbreadth round about

and made a crown of GOLD for the border

thereof round about

And he cast for it four rings of GOLD

and put the rings upon the four corners that were in the

four feet thereof

Over against the border were the rings

the places for the staves to bear the table

And he made the staves of shittim wood

and overlaid them with GOLD – to bear the table

And he made the vessels which were upon the table – his

dishes – spoons – bowls – covers to cover withal

of pure gold

Bezaleel built candlestickverses 17-24

And he made the candlestick of pure GOLD

of beaten work made he the candlestick

his shaft – branch – bowels – knobs – flowers

and three branches of the candlestick out of the

other side thereof

three bowls made after the fashion of almonds

in one branch – a knob and a flower

three bowls made like almonds in another branch

a knob and flower – so throughout the six branches

going out of the candlestick

And in the candlestick were four bowls made like almonds

his knobs and his flowers

and a knob under two branches of the same

and a knob under two branches of the same

and a knob under two branches of the same

and a knob under two branches of the same

                                    according to the six branches

going out of it

Their knobs and their branches were of the same

all of it was one beaten work of pure GOLD

And he made his seven lamps

and his snuffers – snuff dishes – of pure GOLD

of a talent of pure GOLD made he it

                                    and all the vessels thereof

And he overlaid it with pure GOLD – both the top of it

and the sides thereof round about – and the horns of it

also he made unto it a crown of GOLD round about

And he made two rings of GOLD for it under the crown thereof

by the two corners of it – upon the two sides thereof

to be places for the staves to bear it withal

And he made the staves of shittim wood

            and overlaid them with gold

And he made the holy anointing oil

and the pure incense of sweet spices

according to the work of the apothecary

COMMENTARY:

DAILY SPIRITUAL BREAKFAST: Young Believers

: 5        And he put the staves into the rings by the sides of the ark, to bear the ark. (5375 “bear” [nasa’] means lift up, carry, support, to raise, or take up)

DEVOTION:  We understand that while the workers were making the Tabernacle, they knew that they would be moving it on a regular basis. Remember that when the cloud moved the children of Israel moved with the cloud.

Each of the items of the Tabernacle had to have a way to carry them, throughout the wilderness wanderings. God instructed Moses in this fact and he had the men who knew what to do to carry all the items safely.

It was quite a bit of work to take the Tabernacle down and put it up. It was quite a bit of work to put it back together each time they stopped. There were many priests involved in this procedure.

God wants the work to be done by HIS people today. We are now called a kingdom of priest if we are followers of Jesus Christ. We have to carry the load of the work of God. Each person has a responsibility if the church is to move forward for the LORD.

Each church needs special work done to move it forward for the LORD. It takes all the priests to be involved. What is your special duty to perform to move the house of the LORD forward today?

If all of God’s people work together with the help of the Holy Spirit, we could see a revival in our land and around the world. It should be our prayer.

Details are important to the LORD. The church moves forward on the proper work done by all HIS servants in one location. Make your church a bright lighthouse for the LORD. Make it a real place to worship HIM.

CHALLENGE: Each of us should carry our part of the load to make sure the LORD is glorified in our local church.

DAILY SPIRITUAL LUNCH: Transitional Believers

: 8        One cherub on the end on this side, and another cherub on the other end of that side: out of the mercy seat made he the cherubims on the two ends thereof. (3742 “cherubims” [karuwb] means an angelic being, as guardians of Eden, as flanking God’s throne, as an image form hovering over the Ark of the Covenant or ministers)

DEVOTION:  There are said to be about twenty-two different types of angels in the Bible. Each type of angel has their individual responsibility in their service to the LORD. There are angels what stand before the throne of God singing praises. There are angels that are messengers of God. There are angels over the messengers of God. There are angels over each nation of the world.

We also have to remember that there are evil angels fighting with the good angels of God all of the time in the heavens. There is a battle going on all the time over nations concerning whether they will be faithful to the LORD or not.

Here we have the building of the mercy seat that was to go into the Holy of Holies in the Tabernacle. The High Priest was the only one who could enter into this location and it was only once a year on the Day of Atonement when he offered blood for the sins of the nation and blood for his own personal sins.

When he came in to sprinkle the blood on the mercy seat there would be these two guardian angels over the mercy seat. They were the ones who served the LORD as individuals who guarded whatever God wanted guarded.

They were the type of angel that stood at the entrance to the Garden of Eden to keep Adam and Eve from returning to the Garden. They were kept out because of their sin. God gave them that assignment.

Each believer has a guardian angel who assigned to them by the LORD at the point of salvation. Why do we need a guardian angel? Because of the enemy we face on a daily basis.

CHALLENGE: The battle is real in our life just as it was real in the lives of the children of Israel. God wants to help HIS people win their battles.

: 16      And he made the vessels which were on the table, his dishes, and his spoons, and his bowls, and his covers to cover withal, of pure gold. (2091 “gold” [zahab] means as precious metal, a soft, yellow, malleable, ductile, metallic element that was considered precious or fair weather)

DEVOTION:  Details, details, details. We find that when the LORD does something HE includes all the details that need to be done. HE gives instruction to the builders but HE also had all the instructions written down by Moses to make sure that everyone knows what needs to be done and if there needs to be anything replaced it can be done by following these instructions.

Now most of us would have thought that only the main objects would have to be covered with gold but here we find that every object used in the Tabernacle had to be covered with gold.

Notice the list in this verse. It seems that these items could have been made of something else but they were not. The worship of the LORD was to be precious in the sight of the people and it should be precious in our sight.

Too often we treat the worship of the LORD haphazardly. We don’t think some parts of our worship is important and yet God thought every detail of the items used in worship were to be precious.

We are God’s peculiar treasure. We need to realize that HE wants us to know that HE loves us and considers us precious. We should do the same in our treatment of our times of worship.

CHALLENGE:  Do we worship to “win the gold” for the LORD? Is our worship precious in our sight like it is in God’s sight?

DAILY SPIRITUAL SUPPER: Mature Believers

:23       And he made his seven lamps, and his snuffers, and his snuff dishes, of pure gold.(5216 “lamps” [niyr] means lamp. [Strong, J. (1995). Enhanced Strong’s Lexicon. Woodside Bible Fellowship])

DEVOTION:  There is a common expression about being clueless, and that is that a person looked like “a deer in the headlights.”  This refers to the fact that deer are often parallelized in their movements when confronted with bright light, and therefore will not move even in the face of an object which is about to strike them.  It is as if the light itself is enough to cause them to freeze.

God wanted His people to pause when they saw the beauty of the temple, because it was supposed to remind them of His majesty.  Included in this was the candlestick with the seven lamps (candles) upon it.  These seven lights were to provide the interior lighting of what was to be a special place of worship and sacrifice.  The number seven highlights the fact the completeness of the light that was to guide them.  These lamps were to remain lit while the tabernacle was in place and were extinguished whenever it was to be moved.

What is amazing is that the LORD foresaw the detail necessary for the tabernacle including the need for light inside of it, and so He directs Moses how to provide for this light.  Later, God would provide light in a different form, through His Son Jesus (John 1:4-5).  This would be the light that shows every man how to come to God.  There would never be the need again to extinguish the lamps and relight them.  Light was given in order to facilitate action, and it was never God’s intention for man to be parallelized by viewing His light.

CHALLENGE:  Are you allowing the light that is in your home remind you of the majesty of God?  If not, then reflect upon your need for your soul to be enlightened.

: 29      And he made the holy anointing oil, and the pure incense of sweet spices, according to the work of the apothecary. (7543 “apothecary” [raqach] means skilled incense maker, perfumer, pharmacist, compounder of drug, confectionary, mixer or prepare)

DEVOTION:  Details, details, details. The LORD had given Moses a picture of what was in heaven. He took what he saw on the mountain and related it to the people. The LORD provided gifted men to make all of the parts of the Tabernacle. He was given them instructions just as the LORD had given him and he had seen on the mountain.

God has chosen a few good men and women to make the furniture for the Tabernacle. The offering was taken and all the material was given to those who were in charge of the construction. Here we find that the Holy Spirit gifted a man, Bezaleel, to do all kinds of tasks for the tabernacle.

He was not only talented with construction but also with chemistry. He made the mix that was made into the holy anointing oil. This was special. This was a mixture that no one else was to make on penalty of death. It was holy only unto the LORD. No other mixture could be used for use in the Tabernacle.

Bezaleel was not only gifted in working with wood, but also with the ability to work with chemicals. He was a confectionary. He could mix the right amounts of spices to form this special incense for use in the Tabernacle.

We know that every Christian has at least one gift given to him at the point of salvation. We need to use the gift that God has given us for HIS service. We have seen individuals who seem to have more than one gift. They need to use them all for the LORD.

The church will only move forward if all the members are working together to form one body to serve the LORD in a local community. Here we have a few men directing the making of all that was necessary to build the Tabernacle to worship the LORD in the wilderness. We need those same few men to lead a local congregation to service, so that, we can worship the LORD properly today.

Are we using our gifts to advance the local church we are attending? In order for the local church to function properly it needs all of its members to use their gifts on a regular basis. Some get burned out because many sit on the sidelines and don’t use their gifts. Each of us will have to answer to the LORD the lack of use of our gift to help the local church move forward in our communities. Everyone’s gifts are needed to have the church function beautifully. Are our local churches functioning beautifully? Can we do something to help this to happen? Will we????

Find out your individual gift and use that gift in your local body on a regular basis. Watch the LORD work a miracle in your community!!!! We have too much fighting in our local bodies of believers.

CHALLENGE: We have too much fighting amongst fellow Bible believing churches over minor details. We need to major on the majors!!!

QUOTES regarding passage

There were six special pieces of furniture associated with the tabernacle and the ark of the covenant is mentioned first. A wooden chest forty-five inches long, twenty-seven inches wide, and twenty-seven inches high, it stood in the holy of holies where God’s “shekinah” presence rested. On it rested the golden mercy seat which was God’s throne (Pss. 80:1; 99:1; 2 Kings 19:15, all niv).

The ark had many names besides “the ark of the covenant” (Num. 10:33). It was called “the ark of God” (1 Sam. 3:3), “the ark of the Lord” (Josh. 3:15), “the ark of the Lord God” (1 Kings 2:26), “the ark of the testimony” (Ex. 25:22), because the tables of the law were in it, “the holy ark” (2 Chron. 35:3), and “the ark of [God’s] strength” (Ps. 132:8). The ark represented the power and authority of God in the camp of Israel, and this is why it’s named first. This is the Old Testament illustration of Matthew 6:33.

The ark also teaches us about Jesus Christ. It was made of wood, which speaks of His humanity, but was completely overlaid with gold, which speaks of His deity. According to Hebrews 9:4, within the ark were the tables of the law (Ex. 25:16), a pot of manna (16:32–34), and Aaron’s rod that budded (Num. 16–17). These objects tell us that the law of God was in Christ’s heart and He perfectly obeyed and fulfilled it (Ps. 40:6–8; Heb. 10:5–9); He is the Bread of Life who gives eternal life to all who receive Him (John 6:32); and He lives by the power of an endless life so we can be fruitful for God (Heb. 7:16).

The golden mercy seat upon the ark had a cherub at each end and their wings overshadowed the ark. Once a year, on the Day of Atonement, the high priest was permitted to enter the holy of holies, where he sprinkled the blood of the sacrifices on the mercy seat (Lev. 16). This made atonement for Israel’s sins for another year (vv. 29–34). The fulfillment of this type was when Jesus Christ died once for all for the sins of the world and took away sin by the sacrifice of Himself (Heb. 9:11–10:14).

Frequently in Scripture you find the image of finding safety “under His wings.” Sometimes this refers to the mother bird protecting her young (Pss. 57:1; 63:7; Matt. 23:37; Luke 13:34), but it can also refer to being under the wings of the cherubim in the holy of holies (Ruth 2:12; Pss. 17:8; 36:7–8; 61:4; 91:1, 4).

Moses was permitted to enter the holy of holies where God spoke to him from the mercy seat and revealed His will for the people of Israel (Ex. 25:21–22; 29:42; 30:6, 36; Num. 7:89; see Ps. 91:1). God’s people today have access into God’s presence through the blood of Jesus Christ (Heb. 10:19–25), for He is our “mercy seat” (propitiation, Rom. 3:25; 1 John 2:2). Because of His blood shed for us, the throne of God is for us a throne of grace.

The ark of the Lord and the pillar of cloud led the way as the Jews marched from place to place (Num. 10:33–36). In their pilgrim journey, the people of God get their directions from the throne of God and follow the glory of God   (Wiersbe, W. W. (1998). Be delivered (pp. 135–137). Colorado Springs, CO: Chariot Victor Pub)

Bezalel is said to have made the ark (37:1–9), whereas Moses says “so I made the ark” in Deuteronomy 10:3. Moses is not actually taking credit for making the ark; rather, he directed the work and made certain that it was executed according to the divine pattern. (Hoffmeier, J. K. (1995). Exodus. In Evangelical Commentary on the Bible (Vol. 3, p. 62). Grand Rapids, MI: Baker Book House.

Ver. 1. And Bezaleel made the ark of shittim-wood, &c.] Jarchi says, because he gave his mind to this work more than the rest of the wise men, it is called by his name. It is a notion of some Jewish writers that the ark was made by Bezaleel, without the help of others; but there is no sufficient reason to be given for it; for other things are equally ascribed to him in this and the following chapter, as the mercy-seat with the cherubim, the shew-bread table, the candlestick of pure gold, the two altars, the laver of brass, with other things, which are only said to be made by him, because they were made by his direction, and he having the oversight of them whilst making; wherefore Aben Ezra observes, that this is particularly said for the glory of the ark. Of the ark, and all other things mentioned in this chapter, see the notes on ch. 25 and 30. (Gill, J. (1810). An Exposition of the Old Testament (Vol. 1, p. 534). London: Mathews and Leigh.

I. It may be thought strange that Moses, when he had recorded so fully the instructions given him upon the mount for the making of all these things, should here record as particularly the making of them, when it might have sufficed only to have said, in a few words, that each of these things was made exactly according to the directions before recited. We are sure that Moses, when he wrote by divine inspiration, used no vain repetitions; there are no idle words in scripture. Why then are so many chapters taken up with this narrative, which we are tempted to think needless and tedious? But we must consider, 1. That Moses wrote primarily for the people of Israel, to whom it would be of great use to read and hear often of these divine and sacred treasures with which they were entrusted. These several ornaments wherewith the tabernacle was furnished they were not admitted to see, but the priests only, and therefore it was requisite that they should be thus largely described particularly to them. That which they ought to read again (lest they should fail of doing it) is written again and again: thus many of the same passages of the history of Christ are in the New Testament related by two or three, and some by four of the evangelists, for the same reason. The great things of God’s law and gospel we need to have inculcated upon us again and again. To write the same (says St. Paul) to me is not grievous, but for you it is safe, Phil. 3:1. 2. Moses would thus show the great care which he and his workmen took to make every thing exactly according to the pattern shown him in the mount. Having before given us the original, he here gives us the copy, that we may compare them, and observe how exactly they agree. Thus he appeals to every reader concerning his fidelity to him that appointed him, in all his house, and in all the particulars of it, Heb. 3:5. And thus he teaches us to have respect to all God’s commandments, even to every iota and tittle of them. 3. It is intimated hereby that God takes delight in the sincere obedience of his people, and keeps an exact account of it, which shall be produced to their honour in the resurrection of the just. None can be so punctual in their duty, but God will be as punctual in his notices of it. He is not unrighteous to forget the work and labour of love, in any instance of it, Heb. 6:10. 4. The spiritual riches and beauties of the gospel tabernacle are hereby recommended to our frequent and serious consideration. Go walk about this Zion, view it and review it: the more you contemplate the glories of the church, the more you will admire them and be in love with them. The charter of its privileges, and the account of its constitution, will very well bear a second reading.

II. In these verses we have an account of the making of the ark, with its glorious and most significant appurtenances, the mercy-seat and the cherubim. Consider these three together, and they represent the glory of a holy god, the sincerity of a holy heart, and the communion that is between them, in and by a Mediator. 1. It is the glory of a holy god that he dwells between the cherubim; that is, is continually attended and adored by the blessed angels, whose swiftness was signified by their faces being one towards another. 2. It is the character of an upright heart that, like the ark of the testimony, it has the law of God hid and kept in it. 3. By Jesus Christ, the great propitiation, there is reconciliation made, and a communion settled, between us and God: he interposes between us and God’s displeasure; and not only so, but through him we become entitled to God’s favour. If he write his law in our heart, he will be to us a God and we shall be to him a people. From the mercy-seat he will teach us, there he will accept us, and show himself merciful to our unrighteousness; and under the shadow of his wings we shall be safe and easy (Henry, M. (1994). Matthew Henry’s commentary on the whole Bible: complete and unabridged in one volume (p. 149). Peabody: Hendrickson.)

FROM MY READING:

(Remember the only author that I totally agree with is the HOLY SPIRIT in the inerrant WORD OF GOD called THE BIBLE! All other I try to gleam what I can to help me grow in the LORD!!)

Acts 9
On his way to Damascus, Saul has a divine revelation of Jesus and is converted.
INSIGHT

From God’s perspective, the relationship between Christ and the church is a very close and dear one. Jesus is the Son of God; the church is His bride. To harm the church is to harm Christ. Though Paul never laid a hand on Him, Jesus spoke from heaven, “Saul, Saul, why are you persecuting Me?” (v. 4). Just as Paul did, we must strive to gain God’s perspective on who we are. We are His bride, His chosen one, the delight of His life. When we see ourselves as He sees us, we can be more successful at living as we should

SPECIFIC PROMISES FULFILLED

…they shall look upon me whom they have pierced, and they shall mourn.
Zechariah 12:10
Prophecy tells us that Christ is to be “a light to lighten the Gentiles” (Luke 2:32), a most astounding thing to have said to the Jews. But it was said many times in the prophecy of Isaiah, in 42:6 and 60:3 and in other places. We are also told in Isaiah 53 that His death is to be vicarious. We are told that He will enter into the city of Jerusalem riding on a donkey (Zechariah 9:9), and you remember how that was fulfilled. We are told that He is to be sold for thirty pieces of silver, and that with His price a potter’s field will be purchased (Zechariah 11:12-13). We are told that lots would be cast for His garments (Psalm 22:18). We are told that He will be given vinegar to drink in His sorrow (Psalm 69:21). We are even told that He would utter certain words on the cross: “My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?” (Psalm 22:1). Psalm 22:16 says that His hands and feet will be pierced, and Zechariah 12:10 adds, “…they shall look upon me whom they have pierced, and they s hall mourn.” And we are told in Isaiah 53:9 that He will make His grave with the wicked and with the rich in His death, and we know that He was buried in the tomb of Joseph of Arimathea.
The Bible also exhorts us to consider Him because He is the only one by whom we can be reconciled to God and by whom we can know God. We read in Hebrews 12:24 that He is “the mediator of the new covenant.” He said Himself, “I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me” (John 14:6). Anyone who says a thing like that must be looked at and considered. If we value our salvation and want to know God, we must listen to such a person.
A Thought to Ponder: We are told in Isaiah 53 that Christ’s death is to be vicarious.

Cleansed by the Word
“Wherewithal shall a young man cleanse his way? by taking heed thereto according to thy word.” (Psalm 119:9)
Psalm 119:9-16 provides key instructions for those who would seek to please their Creator with a godly life.
“Taking heed” (Hebrew shamar—guarding) of God’s Word is the foundation upon which a godly life is built (vv. 10-11). The psalmist sought God with his whole heart and pleaded with God to prevent him from wandering (Hebrew shagah—to stray through ignorance). That plea was then turned into a confirmation and an understanding: “Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee” (v. 11).
With the assurance of these foundational elements, the psalmist promised the Lord that he will organize his life so that he “will not forget thy word” (v. 16).
Similar to the apostle John’s assurance in his first epistle, the psalmist recognized behaviors that he was already exhibiting. His “lips” have “declared” the judgments of God (v. 13). He knows that he has “rejoiced in the way” (v. 14) of God’s revealed testimonies as much as the ungodly have boasted of gaining wealth. He is no stranger to godly living and loves the way of God, seeking to excel in holiness (1 John 5:3).
The section closes with two “I will” promises, surely based upon his earlier commitment to cleanse his way. The psalmist promised to “meditate in [God’s] precepts, and have respect unto [His] ways” (v. 15). This assumes time, study, and careful thought about the purposes and intent of God’s message. It is not a promise to sit comfortably and “clear one’s mind” of cogent thinking, waiting on some voice to reveal truth. The psalmist can then “delight” in the statutes of the Word (Psalm 119:16Romans 7:22).
As we seek to know God’s great Word, may His works refresh our hearts and delight our lives.    (HMM III, The Institute for Creation Research)
