COMMENTARY:

DAILY SPIRITUAL BREAKFAST: Young Believers

: 13      And you shall put on Aaron the holy the holy garments, and anoint him, and sanctify him: that he may minister to me in the priest’s office. (6942 “sanctify” [qadash] means hallow, dedicate, holy, prepare, consecrate, or be separate)

DEVOTION:  This was the first service that was to be held in the Tabernacle. These were the priests that were supposed to hold the first service in the Tabernacle. The instructions were plain.

“You” stood for Moses. He was to put the garments on Aaron for him to administer the HOLY ceremony of worship to the LORD. He was to anoint him with HOLY oil to show that he was chosen by God to serve in the capacity of High Priest to the children of Israel. He was to sanctify or set him apart for this responsibility for the rest of his life. All this was done to have Aaron as a ministry to the LORD alone as HIS priest to the people.

God wanted this show of ceremony to allow the people to observe what is to be done in the future as a new High Priest took office. They were to understand that they were to respect the office of High Priest. It was also to show the High Priest that he answered to the LORD for his actions.

We are not to have someone teach us the truth of the Word of God who is not called of God for that purpose. He should have the recognition of the LORD and those who are spiritual men to hold the office today of pastor. It is an awesome responsibility that needs to not be taken lightly. There should be much prayer over the one who is to lead a congregation in worship of our Almighty God.

Are you praying throughout the week for the pastor as he prepared the message from the Word of God for the congregation? Are you praying for heart changes to happen to you and the rest of the congregation each Sunday?

CHALLENGE: Do you leave the church service inspired to serve the LORD better for the rest of the week?

DAILY SPIRITUAL LUNCH: Transitional Believers

: 17      And it came to pass in the first month in the second year, on the first day of the month, that the tabernacle was reared up. (6965 “reared up” [quwm] means raise, establish, accomplish, to get up, to be assembled, or to be created by having components)

DEVOTION:  In the first year that the children of Israel left Egypt they were instructed to build a place of worship for the LORD called the Tabernacle. God had given two men the special ability to lead this project.

Within a year they had the Tabernacle built and ready to be put together. God commanded them to put it together by the 1/1/02. HE wanted them to start using the Tabernacle as a place of worship.

There was a special ceremony preformed on that occasion to show the people that the LORD wanted to be worshiped. HE entered the Tabernacle with all the people watching. They were not able to get near the Tabernacle because the glory of the LORD prevented it from happening.

God wants us to worship HIM regularly. We should be in church each Sunday we are able to be there. Our salvation should cause us to give glory to the LORD for all HE has done in our life.

The instructions we are given is that none of us should forsake or forget to worship the LORD each Sunday to show our love for HIM. This also shows that we are willing to be obedient to HIS commands for us today.

CHALLENGE:  Encourage others to come with you to worship the LORD this Sunday and every Sunday.

: 33      And he reared up the court round about the tabernacle and the altar, and set up the hanging of the court gate. So Moses finished the work. (3615 “finished” [kalah] means accomplish, fulfill, complete, or bring to an end)

DEVOTION:  Moses was called of God to lead the children of Israel away from Egypt. He didn’t want the responsibility and tried to give God excuses what he was unfit for the job. He continued to reject the idea of leadership until God gave him his brother as the spokesman to Pharaoh.

Now Moses has been leading the people for over a year. He has brought them the Ten Commandments down from the mountain. He has given them instructions regarding the building of the Tabernacle after the pattern God had showed him in the mountain.

The Tabernacle is built. The priests were dedicated. The glory of the LORD was about to come upon the Tabernacle for the first time. Moses had completed this task with honors.

Now the children of Israel had a place to worship the LORD on a regular basis. Also the priests had a place to serve the LORD on a regular basis. When the LORD wanted the children of Israel to move HE showed it by the movement of the cloud or the fire.

We are to complete the work the LORD has given each one of us to do for HIS glory. We may come reluctantly to serve HIM like Moses or willingly as we should because of our love for HIM. We are to come and complete the work of the LORD.

The Holy Spirit is given for us to complete this work. We can greave the Holy Spirit by our sins or we can quench the Holy Spirit by not listening to HIM the first time but the LORD wants us to do our duty to HIM.

What assignment has the LORD given you to do? Are you listening to HIS voice through the ministry of the Holy Spirit in your life? No one is to be giving excuses why they can’t do what HE wants them to do. HE provides the strength to do whatever HE gives us as our assignment.

CHALLENGE: Find out what God wants you to do with your life and finish what you start. It will bring glory to HIM!!!

DAILY SPIRITUAL SUPPER: Mature Believers

:37       But if the cloud were not taken up, then they journeyed not till the day that it was taken up. (5927 “taken up” [ʿalah] means 1 to go up, ascend, climb. 1a (Qal). 1a1 to go up, ascend. 1a2 to meet, visit, follow, depart, withdraw, retreat. 1a3 to go up, come up (of animals). 1a4 to spring up, grow, shoot forth (of vegetation). 1a5 to go up, go up over, rise (of natural phenomenon). 1a6 to come up (before God). 1a7 to go up, go up over, extend (of boundary). 1a8 to excel, be superior to. 1b (Niphal). 1b1 to be taken up, be brought up, be taken away. 1b2 to take oneself away. 1b3 to be exalted. 1c (Hiphil). 1c1 to bring up, cause to ascend or climb, cause to go up. 1c2 to bring up, bring against, take away. 1c3 to bring up, draw up, train. 1c4 to cause to ascend. 1c5 to rouse, stir up (mentally). 1c6 to offer, bring up (of gifts). 1c7 to exalt. 1c8 to cause to ascend, offer. 1d (Hophal). 1d1 to be carried away, be led up. 1d2 to be taken up into, be inserted in. 1d3 to be offered. 1e (Hithpael) to lift oneself. [Strong, J. (1995). Enhanced Strong’s Lexicon. Woodside Bible Fellowship])

DEVOTION:  God’s plan was to give the children of Israel moment-by-moment guidance on what they should do.  That is why He wanted them to always be “looking to the sky.”  He wanted them to notice whether the pillar of cloud was lifted up or not.  When it was lifted up, they all knew it was time to pack their bags and tents and get ready to move on.

This “lifting up” had further significance in the life of Jesus Christ.  He Himself predicted that if He were lifted up, He would draw all men to Himself (John 12:32).  This was referring to the episode in the wilderness when the people were being bit by serpents because of their unfaithfulness, and yet they merely needed to look up at the bronze serpent in order to be healed (Number 21:9).  In the same way, by looking up to Jesus and His finished work on the cross, people could be forgiven of their sins.

The last lifting up mentioned in the Bible is that of the resurrected Jesus being lifted up into heaven (Acts 1:9).  His being lifted up while they watched Him was a reassurance that He had truly been resurrected (they could all see Him), and that He was going into heaven back to the fellowship He had enjoyed with the Father.  His promise had been that He would return in like manner to that in which He was taken.

So, we see that the children of Israel, like all of us, need God’s guidance in our lives.  He is the one who tells us when to move and where, and where to stay.

CHALLENGE:  Are you looking to God for guidance for your life?

: 38      For the cloud of the LORD was upon the tabernacle by day, and fire was on it by night, in the sight of all the house of Israel, throughout all their journeys. (6051 “cloud” [‘anan] means smoke, fog, the nimbus or a visible mass)

DEVOTION:  The parts of the tabernacle are made, inspected and now they are ready to be put together. The LORD commands Moses to put the pieced of the Tabernacle together. HE commands him to anoint Aaron the High Priest and to sanctify the parts of the Tabernacle. Moses is to dress Aaron’s sons in their clothing and they are to be anointed for service. They are part of an everlasting priesthood.

This all takes place after the children of Israel had been in the wilderness exactly a year. On the first day of the first month of the second year of their wandering the Tabernacle was finished.

When Moses was finished putting the tabernacle together the glory of the LORD appeared. The glory of the LORD was so great that it filled the Tabernacle. The glory of the LORD filled it to the point that Moses couldn’t even enter the Tabernacle.

This glory of the LORD was taken up when the children of Israel were to move forward. This visible mass appeared as a cloud by day and a fire by night. The children of Israel always knew the will of God regarding their movement.

It would be nice today if we had a personal visible mass to give us direction to and from where the LORD wanted us each day. Today we have the Word of God to guide us each day. The presence of the LORD can be found through close fellowship with the LORD.

Our fellowship depends on our practicing of the disciplines of the faith. Some of the disciplines are prayer, fasting, meditation, worship, etc. Are we practicing the disciplines of the faith on a regular basis? Does our life show that we are walking when God wants us to walk and standing still when HE wants us to stand still?

CHALLENGE: The LORD wants to give us DAILY direction through HIS Word. If we are not in it, that will not happen. Practice the disciplines of the faith DAILY!!!

QUOTES regarding passage

34–38 The tabernacle had been constructed and set in order as the Lord had commanded Moses; yet something was lacking. Form must be invested with divine life; so “the glory of the Lord filled the tabernacle” (vv.34–35). On the Lord’s glory, see 16:7, 10; 24:16–17; 33:18, 22. With the arrival of the glory of the Lord, the nation of Israel was ready to move on. The promise of the divine messenger to lead the people was fulfilled (23:20, 23; 32:34; 33:2). “The Lord now dwelled in their midst as their Leader, their King, and until they reached Canaan the Lord, by means of the cloud, determined whether Israel stayed or moved on” (Gispen, p. 335). The signal to journey was “whenever the cloud lifted” (v.36; cf. comment on 13:21; see also 17:1; 25:22). (Kaiser, W. C., Jr. (1990). Exodus. In F. E. Gaebelein (Ed.), The Expositor’s Bible Commentary: Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers (Vol. 2, p. 497). Grand Rapids, MI: Zondervan Publishing House.)

40:34–38. God’s promise (“I will dwell among the Israelites and be their God,” 29:45) was fulfilled as the glory of the Lord filled the tabernacle. The cloud, symbolic of the Lord’s presence, had filled the temporary tent outside the camp only on occasions (33:7–11). Now, however, it came to fill the tabernacle. In fact even Moses, who had seen something of God’s glory (33:18–23), was now unable to enter the tabernacle.

The cloud that had guided the Israelites when they set out from Succoth (13:20–22) now dwelt among them to lead them to the land of promise (40:36–38). As the cloud lifted the people would travel. If it stayed over the tabernacle but was not lifted from above it, the nation did not travel. The sovereign God of heaven had taken a people in slavery, delivered them in power, made a covenant with them, and established them into a theocracy, a nation under God on earth. The sign of the covenant was the Sabbath, and its regulations (stipulations) were the Law which included the Ten Commandments and various civil and ceremonial ordinances. The book ends on a strong positive note: God was with the nation, and He was guiding them on to the Promised Land. (Hannah, J. D. (1985). Exodus. In J. F. Walvoord & R. B. Zuck (Eds.), The Bible Knowledge Commentary: An Exposition of the Scriptures (Vol. 1, p. 162). Wheaton, IL: Victor Books.)

As we’ve studied Exodus, we’ve traveled with Moses from the glory of God in the burning bush to the glory of God in the tabernacle. What are the basic truths we’ve learned?

1. God’s purpose for His people is freedom. He doesn’t want us to be in bondage to self, sin, or the world.

2. God’s purpose in freedom is that His people manifest responsible conduct and service. Freedom isn’t the privilege of doing whatever we want to do. It’s the opportunity to do whatever God wants us to do.

3. Responsible freedom (maturity) comes as we experience trials and testings and trust God to see us through. Complaining when life becomes difficult is a mark of spiritual immaturity.

4. God wants to dwell with us in a deeper way (John 14:21–24.) Our sins grieve Him and He withdraws His fellowship and blessing when we rebel. We have a heavenly Intercessor and Advocate in Jesus Christ, and we can confess our sins to Him and be forgiven (1 John 1:5–2:2).

5. Believers today are a kingdom of priests whose first responsibility is to worship and please God. Everything we are and everything we do depends on that. As priests, we must minister to one another and to a lost world.

6. The most important goal in the Christian life is to be able to stand before God one day and say sincerely, “I have glorified You on the earth. I have finished the work which You have given me to do” (John 17:4, nkjv). (Wiersbe, W. W. (1998). Be delivered (p. 177). Colorado Springs, CO: Chariot Victor Pub.)

40:34 the cloud covered … the glory of the Lord filled. This was the final confirmation for Moses and the people that all the work for setting up God’s dwelling place had been properly done and all the tedious instructions obediently followed.

40:36 taken up. This first occurred (as recorded in Nu 10:11) 50 days after the tabernacle was finished and erected. (MacArthur, J. F., Jr. (2006). The MacArthur study Bible: New American Standard Bible. (Ex 40:34–36). Nashville, TN: Thomas Nelson Publishers.)

Ver. 35. And Moses was not able to enter into the tent of the congregation, &c.] He had been there before, both in the holy, and in the most holy place, to see that the furniture of each were put as the Lord directed, which being done he came out again; and now a cloud being on the outside of it, and the glory of the Lord within, he was so struck with an awe and reverence of the divine Being, of whose presence these were a symbol, that he could not engage his heart, or had not boldness to go into the tabernacle until he was called, Lev. 1:1 for so it follows: because the cloud abode thereon, and the glory of the Lord filled the tabernacle; there was something, no doubt, very venerable in the spreading cloud, as well as very striking in the refulgent glory, which commanded distance, even to a person that had been used to converse with God; Moses, that went into the midst of the cloud where the Lord was, now could not or durst not go into the tabernacle it covered; and he who then was not deterred by the sight of the glory of God, which was like devouring fire, ch. 24:16, 17, 18 now could not, or at least thought it not proper and advisable to enter into the holy place erected for the service and worship of God; the chief reason of which may be, because, as yet, he had not a call to enter, as he then had, and as we find was afterwards given him, Lev. 1:1 and perhaps another reason may be, because he was now no longer a priest; Aaron and his sons being invested with the priestly office, whose business it was to draw nigh to God; and indeed the call he afterwards had was not to come into the tabernacle, but was a call unto him out of it. (Gill, J. (1810). An Exposition of the Old Testament (Vol. 1, p. 540). London: Mathews and Leigh.)

 FROM MY READING:

(Remember the only author that I totally agree with is the HOLY SPIRIT in the inerrant WORD OF GOD called THE BIBLE! All other I try to gleam what I can to help me grow in the LORD!!)

Acts 16
Paul travels to Macedonia, Achaia, and Greece, carrying the Gospel.
INSIGHT

During World War II, many soldiers “got religion” while in their foxholes under enemy fire. Because many of those “foxhole conversions” were not genuine, some people become skeptical of anyone who professes Christianity under stressful circumstances. Yet there are many, including the Philippian jailer, who will testify that some “foxhole conversions” are genuine. Be sensitive to the Lord when you are under stress. He may use that very situation to help you get your life into perspective.  (Quiet Walk)

DIVINE ATTRIBUTES OF CHRIST

For he hath put all things under his feet. But when he saith all things are put under him, it is manifest that he is excepted, which did put all things under him.  1 Corinthians 15:27
The Bible ascribes to Christ certain divine attributes. For instance, omnipotence. Hebrews 1:3 says that He upholds “all things by the word of his power”–no stronger statement than that is possible. “All things are put under him” (1 Corinthians 15:27). Then omniscience is attributed to Him. In John 2:24-25 you will find the claim, “he knew what was in man.” It was not necessary for anybody to tell Him.
Then omnipresence is attributed to Him also. Matthew 18:20 says, “For where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I.” In Matthew 28:20 He says, “And, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end.” And in John 3:13 there is a very striking statement: “And no man hath ascended up to heaven, but he that came down from heaven, even the Son of man which is in heaven.” He said those words while He was on earth “the Son of man who “is in heaven.” And, indeed, the apostle Paul writes that He “filleth all in all” (Ephesians 1:23)–again a very comprehensive statement.
Another divine attribute is His eternity: “In the beginning was the Word” (John 1:1). We also have statements about His immutability: He cannot change. Hebrews 13:8 tells us, “Jesus Christ the same yesterday, and to day, and for ever.” Then, of course, the Bible asserts His preexistence. Colossians 1:17 tells us, “And he is before all things.” In John 17:5 He prays, “And now, O Father, glorify thou me with thine own self with the glory which I had with thee before the world was.”
A Thought to Ponder: The Bible ascribes to Christ certain divine attributes.

Bounty from the Word
“Deal bountifully with thy servant, that I may live, and keep thy word.” (Psalm 119:17)
Materialism is so prevelant that it is sometimes difficult to not associate words like “bounty” or “blessing” with earthly riches. This psalmist wasn’t concerned with physical prosperity but rather that God would reveal to him what his own heart sought—“that I may live, and keep thy word.”
He requested spiritual insight: “Open thou mine eyes, that I may behold wondrous things out of thy law” (v. 18). Without hint of greed or self-centered aggrandizement, he only longed to understand the “wondrous” insights of the torah (law). We lack “bounty” if we neglect studying God’s inerrant Word.
We often forget that we are “stranger[s] in the earth” (v. 19). Once adopted into God’s family (Ephesians 1:5), our citizenship (Philippians 3:20) is transferred from this earth to God’s “city” (Hebrews 11:10). Thus, the psalmist begged for God not to “hide” the commandments from him because his “soul breaketh for the longing” (v. 20) he had, in every season, for the judgments of God’s Word.
He remembered God’s swift justice against the “cursed” (v. 21) who “err” (wander, stray) from the Word, since the “princes” (chiefs, leaders) of the land resisted his effort to obey God (v. 23). Nontheless, he was determined to demonstrate his “delight” in the “counselors” within God’s testimonies (v. 24).
Many who claim to be evangelicals today boldly scorn those who trust that “every word of God is pure” (Proverbs 30:5). May God keep us from “the fear of man” (Proverbs 29:25) and embolden our resolve to “worship toward thy holy temple, and praise thy name for thy lovingkindness and for thy truth: for thou hast magnified thy word above all thy name” (Psalm 138:2).
