Hosea 9

Israel is unfaithful                                                        verse 1

Rejoice not – O Israel – for joy as other people

FOR you have gone whoring from your God

you have loved a reward upon every corn floor

Consequences of being unfaithful                                 verse 2- 6

The floor and the winepress shall not feed them

and the new wine shall fail in her

They shall not dwell in the LORD’S land

BUT Ephraim shall return to Egypt

and they shall eat unclean things in Assyria

They shall not offer wine offerings to the LORD

neither shall they be pleasing unto HIM

their sacrifices shall be unto them

as the bread of mourners

all that eat thereof shall be polluted

FOR their bread for their soul shall not come into the

house of the LORD

What will you do in the solemn day

and in the day of the feast of the LORD?

FOR lo – they are gone because of destruction

Egypt shall gather them up – Memphis shall bury them

the pleasant places for their silver

nettles shall possess them

thorns shall be in their tabernacles

LORD’S warning go unheeded                                     verse 7- 9

The day of visitation are come – the days of recompense are come

Israel shall know it – the prophet is a fool

the spiritual man is mad

for the multitude of your iniquity

and the great hatred

The watchman of Ephraim was with my God

BUT the prophet is a snare of a fowler in all his ways

and hatred in the house of his God

They have deeply corrupted themselves – as in the days of Gibeah

THEREFORE HE will remember their iniquity

HE will visit their sins

LORD reviews past of Israel                                         verse 10

I found Israel like grapes in the wilderness

I saw your fathers as the first ripe in the fig tree

as her first time

            BUT they went to Baal-peor

and separated themselves unto that shame

                                    and their abominations were

according as they loved

Consequences of worship of false gods                         verse 11- 13

As for Ephraim – their glory shall fly away like a bird – from the birth

and from the womb – and from the conception

THOUGH they bring up their children – yet I will bereave them

that there shall not a man left – YEA –

woe also to them when I depart from them

Ephraim – as I saw Tyre – is planted in a pleasant place

BUT Ephraim shall bring forth his children to the murderer

Request of Hosea                                                           verse 14

Give them – O LORD – what will you give?

give them a miscarrying womb and dry breasts

LORD answers Hosea                                                   verse 15- 16

All their wickedness is in Gilgal – for there I hated them

for the wickedness of their doings

I will drive them out of MINE house

I will love them no more

all their princes are revolters

Ephraim is smitten – their root is dried up – they shall bear no fruit

yea – though they bring forth

YET will I slay even the beloved fruit of their womb

Consequences of not listening                                       verse 17

My God will cast them away

BECAUSE they did not hearken unto HIM

and they shall be wanderers among the nations

COMMENTARY:

DAILY SPIRITUAL BREAKFAST: Young Believers

: 1        Rejoice not, O Israel, for joy, as other people: for you have gone whoring from your God, you have loved a reward upon every cornfloor. (868 “reward” [ethnan] means hire of a prostitute, price, gain of a harlot, gift or profession of a prostitute)

DEVOTION:  There is a time for everything under the sun. There is a time to live and a time to die. There is a time to rejoice and a time to refrain from rejoicing. The book of Ecclesiastes chapter three gives a list regarding time for things.

Here Hosea is informing Israel it is not a time for rejoicing. Rejoicing is for other people not them. Why? The reason is that they have been going after other gods. They have put into practice in their life things that are displeasing to the LORD. They are now going to pay the consequences for their actions.

They thought that because things were going so well for them that the LORD didn’t care how they acted. They seemed to be having fun. They seemed to enjoy all the pleasures of sin. They liked the price they were earning.

However, it was time to pay for their sins. They would not like it but it was going to happen. The LORD had sent warning after warning and they didn’t care. HE had used up HIS longsuffering. This is a warning to the kingdom of Judah that they were next if they didn’t get their actions together and follow the LORD.

The blessings they thought were from the LORD were coming to an end. Captivity was just around the corner. Their joy was going to turn into mourning.

The god of this present age is not the God of the Bible. There are so many people who think that the good things they have are coming from the LORD when in reality they are coming for the enemy. He is causing them to be tricked into believing that they can worship possessions or sex and not have to pay a consequence. He has done a good job in many of our churches around the world. The time of consequences could be very near.

CHALLENGE: Hearken to the LORD. HE will speak plainly to those who are willing to listen. Don’t accept the price of false worship.

DAILY SPIRITUAL LUNCH: Transitional Believers

: 7        The days of visitation are come, the days of recompense are come; Israel shall know it: the prophet is a fool, the spiritual man is mad, for the multitude of thine iniquity, and the great hatred. (7696 “mad”[shaga] means act like a maniac, lunatic, demented, to think irrationally and not be in the right state of mind or carry on like a madman.)

DEVOTION:  The children of Ephraim were happy in their sin. They were seeing a harvest that they said Baal gave them.

However, they were headed for Egypt again in the form of Assyria. Egypt was a symbol of captivity. They were going back into captivity because of their sin. Memphis was noted for its burial sites. The people were going to be buried in a foreign land. They were not allowed to stay in the LORD’S land.

In the land were true prophets of the LORD. They were warning the people of coming judgment but they were not listening to them. They considered them to be fools. They thought they were lunatics. They didn’t want to even think about their judgment that was coming. The prophets were watchmen that cared for the souls of the people.

However, the people only cared about all the sin they could commit. They had a hatred for the rules of the LORD. It was a great hatred. Their hatred was compared to the days of Gibeah.

In Gibeah there were men that wanted other men. They were called the “sons of Belial.” They were evil men. They wanted the Levite to come out of the house for them to have relations with him. The old man that the Levite was staying with offered his daughter and the Levite’s concubine. They abused the concubine all night. In the morning she was found dead on the doorstep of the old man of the city. The Levite took her body home and divided it into twelve pieces and sent it to all the tribes of Israel. The tribes of Israel gathered against this city of Gibeah that was in the tribe of Benjamin. A war ensued with the children of Benjamin defeated. Now in Hosea’s day there was a similar situation. The children of Israel had strayed far from the LORD.

We need to learn from this situation to watch our attitude toward sin. We need to listen to the Word of God. We need to listen to those men who are walking with the LORD. In our day sin is running rampant and those who preach the Word of God are considered lunatics. They are not with it. Who would we rather follow: the LORD or the people around us????

CHALLENGE: Realize that those who preach the truth of the Word of God are going to be considered crazy. Accept that designation and keep preaching the truth.

DAILY SPIRITUAL SUPPER: Mature Believers

: 15      All their wickedness is in Gilgal: for there I hated them: for the wickedness of their doings I will drive them out of MINE house, I will love them no more: all their princes are revolters. (5637 “revolters” [carar] means rebellious, stubborn, slide back, be defiant, be obstinate, not be willing to change a behavior in any regard, or withdrew)

DEVOTION:  This is the LORD speaking. There comes a point when the LORD stops loving some people.

Remember that the New Testament informs us that “For God so loved the world, that HE gave HIS only begotten son, that whosoever believes in HIM should not perish, but have everlasting life.” [John 3: 16].

Now God loves everyone in the world enough to offer them salvation. Most will reject HIS offer and HE knew that before the foundation of the world. However, that doesn’t mean that we shouldn’t share the gospel with all those in our world.

Hosea has shared the truth of God with those who were living in Judah. He used the nation of Israel as a backdrop for his warning. Those who listened could become a follower of the LORD by repenting of their sin and turning toward the LORD in their actions. Few did.

The Bible informs us that God is longsuffering but that it will not last forever. In Romans one we see groups of individuals who rejected the message of salvation and God gave them over to their desires. This is happening in this chapter as well.

God doesn’t force anyone to become a follower but HE does give everyone an opportunity. When those who reject stand before the Great White Throne judgment they will not be able to say they never had a opportunity.

CHALLENGE:  Witness while there is time. Don’t let any of your family or friends look at you on judgment day and ask you why you said nothing to them.

____________________________________________

: 17       My God will cast them away, because they did not hearken to HIM: and they shall be wanderers among the nations. (5074 “wanderers” [nadad] means to flee, escape, stray, put to flight, or cast aside.)

DEVOTION:  Does God speak to us today? The answer is yes. Have you heard HIS voice in your ears lately? Not really! Well, then how do we hear God speak today? HE speaks through the Word of God and through those who are preaching the truth of the Word of God. HE also speaks to us through the ministry of the Holy Spirit.

We have to be listeners. If we take the time to be silent before HIM HE will speak to us. As we read HIS word we can hear what HE has send through the writers of the Bible. When we pray we can come into HIS presence and listen for HIS teaching.

When we walk down the street we can hear HIM tell us to witness to someone or help someone. This can be the moving of the Holy Spirit in our daily walk with HIM.

Be open to hear HIM speak and then obey what HE tells you to do.

CHALLENGE: Remember HE will never tell you to do something that is against HIS Word the Bible.

QUOTES regarding passage

9:15 The Hebrew of the first line of this verse reads, “All their evil is at Gilgal, for there I (came to) hate them.” The NIV, perhaps to avoid the misunderstanding that Yahweh by hating Israel caused them to sin at Gilgal, has inserted “because” at the beginning of the verse. Actually the verse means that Gilgal is the quintessential city of Israel—it contained every evil that the book of Hosea condemns. The text asserts that one can grasp how much evil was there when one recognizes that this was the city that prompted Yahweh to declare Israel his enemy. Gilgal is described as a cult center in 4:15 and 12:11. It was also the place where Saul’s reign was inaugurated (1 Sam 11:15), and God’s rejection of Saul probably serves here as a type for God’s rejection of the northern monarchy. In effect, this part of the verse means “Every kind of evil that Israel practices can be found at Gilgal; you see, that is where I came to hate them.”

The statement that God would cast Israel out of his house and no longer love them because of their sin looks back to the metaphor of Israel the adulterous wife. The final line, “all their leaders are rebellious,” seems incongruous. However, Gilgal’s role as a type for the northern monarchy because of its historical significance in the reign of Saul, as described above, probably explains why the text would suddenly say a word about Israel’s leaders. In addition, the word translated “rebellious” is found in one other text of Hosea, at 4:16, in another context that concerns Gilgal (Garrett, D. A. (1997). Hosea, Joel (Vol. 19A, pp. 202–203). Nashville: Broadman & Holman Publishers.)

15 God said the severe treatment of Israel was because of “all their wickedness in Gilgal.” By this time Gilgal had clearly become a center of false worship (cf. 4:15). Here they represent the worst elements in the land. The meaning of “hate” (śānēʾ) in this context is defined by the words “I will no longer love them.” It was not that God had a positive animosity toward Israel, but he had nothing favorable to say of them. Because of their “sinful deeds” and the rebellion of their leaders, God would expel them from his “house” (the congregation of Israel; cf. 8:1; 9:8). (Wood, L. J. (1986). Hosea. In F. E. Gaebelein (Ed.), The Expositor’s Bible Commentary: Daniel and the Minor Prophets (Vol. 7, p. 207). Grand Rapids, MI: Zondervan Publishing House.)

9:15. The sinful people were now the object of God’s hatred, rather than His love. The language employed here should probably be seen against a domestic background. The Lord had become displeased with His wife, unfaithful Israel. Such displeasure is termed hatred (cf. Deut. 22:13; 24:3, where the same verb, śānē’, is used). God was prepared to drive her from the household (drive them out of My house), withdrawing His love (His devotion and protective care as her Husband; cf. Hosea 1:6; 2:4–5). The rebellious nation, whose opposition to the Lord’s covenant was epitomized by the Gilgal fertility cult (cf. 4:15; 12:11), would be expelled from His “house” (i.e., the land; cf. 8:1; 9:8). “Drive … out” (gāraš) is used frequently of the conquest of Canaan, whereby the Lord gave Israel possession of His land (cf. Ex. 23:28, 31; Deut. 33:27). Now Israel was about to suffer the same fate as the Canaaanites, whose practices it had assimilated. Hosea may also be alluding here to the sinful couple’s initial expulsion from God’s presence (cf. Gen. 3:24). (Chisholm, R. B., Jr. (1985). Hosea. In J. F. Walvoord & R. B. Zuck (Eds.), The Bible Knowledge Commentary: An Exposition of the Scriptures (Vol. 1, pp. 1399–1400). Wheaton, IL: Victor Books.)

Ephraim, once “planted in a pleasant place,” could no longer be blessed with children. “Fruitfulness” is what the name Ephraim signified. But they should become fruitless and barren; or if children were born they would only be appointed to death (vers. 13, 14). Communion with God and fruit for God go together. Where the first is lacking, the desired result will be absent likewise.

Gilgal, once the place where the reproach of Egypt was rolled away, and the witness to their sanctification to the Holy One of Israel, was now but a testimony to their wickedness. Therefore He whom they had so dishonored would drive them from His house, and disown them, because of their revolt from Himself. When He says “I will love them no more,” it is not that His heart or purposes had changed, but He would not openly interfere for them. He would give them up to their enemies as One who, so far as they could see, loved them no longer (ver. 15). (Ironside, H. A. (1909). Notes on the Minor Prophets. (p. 74). Neptune, NJ: Loizeaux Brothers.)

Ver. 15. All their wickedness is in Gilgal, &c.] A place in the ten tribes, where the covenant of circumcision was renewed in Joshua’s time; the first passover was kept in the land of Canaan, and the people of Israel ate the first-fruits of the land; where the tabernacle was for a while, and sacrifices were offered up to the Lord: but now things were otherwise; all manner of iniquity was committed in it, especially idolatry; for which it was chosen by idolaters, because it had formerly been famous for religious worship: here, though not to the exclusion of other places, as Dan and Beth-el, was the above sin committed; here it begun and spread itself, and had the measure of it filled up; here began the first departure from the Lord, rejecting him, and asking a king in the days of Samuel, as Kimchi and Abarbinel observe; and here were high places and altars erected for idolatry; and this is now the reason of the above threatenings of God, and the predictions of the prophet. Grotins thinks there is a mystical sense in the words, and that they have reference to the sin of the Jews in crucifying Christ on Golgotha; which, in the Syriac language, is the same with Gilgal; but both the people spoken of, and the place, are different: for there I hated them; or therefore, because they sinned so greatly against him in a place where they had formerly worshipped him; their sacrifices there, instead of being acceptable, were the more abominable to him, as they were offered there where his tabernacle once was, and sacrifices were offered to him according to his will: for the wickedness of their doings I will drive them out of mine house; not out of the house of my sanctuary, or the temple, as the Targum; unless this is to be understood of losing the opportunity of going to the temple at Jerusalem, which those of the ten tribes had whilst they were in their own land, which the few godly persons among them then took, and made use of; but now their idolatry increasing in Gilgal, and other places, they should be carried captive; and, if they would, could not go up to the house of the Lord, and worship him there; or rather this may design, either the visible church of God, out of which they would be now ejected; or their native country, where they had been, as the family and household of God; but now should he so no more, but, as afterwards said, wanderers among the nations, and no more reckoned as belonging to the Lord, and under his paternal care and protection: I will love them no more; which is not to be understood of the special love and favour the Lord bears to his own people in Christ, which is everlasting and unchangeable; but of his general and providential favour and regard unto these people, which he had manifested in bestowing many great and good things upon them; but now would do so no more; he would do nothing to them, or for them, that looked like love, or be interpreted of it, but all the reverse; and, by his behaviour to them, shew that they were the objects of his aversion and hatred; and this was to continue, and has continued, and will continue unto the time of their conversion in the latter day, when all Israel shall be saved, Rom. 11:26: all their princes are revolters; from God and his worship, who should have set a good example to the people; and since these were perverse and rebellious against God, it is no wonder that the people in general apostatized. This is to be understood of their king as supreme, and all subordinate rulers; of their judges and magistrates of every order; of all their governors, both civil and ecclesiastic; and not at Gilgal only, but in all the land. There is an elegant paronomasia in the original, the beauty of which cannot be expressed in the translation. (Gill, J. (1810). An Exposition of the Old Testament (Vol. 6, pp. 425–426). London: Mathews and Leigh.)

Nehemiah requests the king’s help in rebuilding Jerusalem.
INSIGHT

Nehemiah comes before the king unable to conceal his agitation over the situation in Jerusalem. When we are faced with situations that need change, preparation is vital. We may not be able to do anything about it at the moment, but we can ask ourselves this question: “If it lay within our power to do anything we wanted to do, what would we do?” If we can answer that, then we will recognize opportunity when it knocks, and we can capitalize on it as Nehemiah does.

CLOTHES AND DURATION OF LIFE

Which of you by taking thought can add one cubit unto his stature Matthew 6:27

There is this matter of clothing. “What shall we put on? How shall we appear before people?” The way to be happy is to impress people with your beauty or your greatness or this or that; your elegance! And immediately everybody looks at you with admiration; so you are perfectly happy, and you put your head on your pillow at night with great contentment; you have achieved your objective.

Money, food, drink, clothing–these are the things, says our Lord, for which people live. In other words, you see, He says that the tragedy of life is due to the fact that men and women are living and are thinking as if they were only bodies. The thought, the attention, the planning, the scheming, the thinking are all in the realm of the body. People conceive of themselves as if they were but animals. That is what animals do–they eat and drink and so on, and so do men and women.

These are the things they talk about; as you see a peacock preening himself, so does a man and so does a woman. What they put on, the impression they make–“they live for these things,” says our Lord, and hence all the troubles.

And, of course, there is this other priority that He mentions, and that is the extension of your life in this world. He puts it in these words: “Which of you by taking thought can add one cubit unto his stature?” (Matthew 6:27). What that really means is, “Which of you by taking thought can add one inch, as it were, to the duration of your life?” But that is what people are interested in–to prolong life, and all the care and the thought and the attention that they put into that! I am not saying this is wrong. Certainly thank God for medicine, for the extension of life; but, says our Lord, do you make that your priority?

A Thought to Ponder: The tragedy of life is that men and women are living and are thinking as if they were only bodies. (From
The Kingdom of God, pp. 34-35)

Garments of Salvation

“I will greatly rejoice in the LORD, my soul shall be joyful in my God; for he hath clothed me with the garments of salvation, he hath covered me with the robe of righteousness, as a bridegroom decketh himself with ornaments, and as a bride adorneth herself with her jewels.” (Isaiah 61:10)
One of the beautiful biblical metaphors of salvation is that of clothing appropriate for coming into God’s presence. Such clothing is not something we ourselves can make or purchase; it must be prepared and provided by God.
Adam and Eve tried to dress themselves in fig leaves, but that could not avail. Their Creator God first had to slay two innocent animals, and then He made “coats of skins and clothed them” (see Genesis 3:7, 21).
So it is today. If we try to come to God dressed in our works of righteousness, we can never make it, for “all our righteousnesses are as filthy rags” in the presence of a holy God (Isaiah 64:6). He must provide the clothing. As our text says, “he hath clothed me with the garments of salvation, he hath covered me with the robe of righteousness.”
In Jesus’ parable of the wedding feast for the king’s son, there was one man who wanted to participate in the feast, but who tried to come in his own attire, disdaining the wedding garment provided by the king for his guests. When the king asked, “How camest thou in hither not having a wedding garment?” he was speechless (Matthew 22:12), and then was bound hand and foot and thrown “into outer darkness” (v. 13).
When “the marriage of the Lamb is come,” His bride must be “arrayed in fine linen, clean and white: . . . the righteousness of saints” (Revelation 19:7-8). But this righteousness will be His, “for we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works” (Ephesians 2:10). Therefore, we are exhorted to “put on thy beautiful garments” (Isaiah 52:1) and be prepared to meet our King. (HMM, The Institute for Creation Research)

How To Counter Satan’s Lies

Here are the three actin steps, each representing the truth that counteracts Satan’s lies:

1.      Speak words of blessing to those who persecute you. Though it will be difficult, you can find something good to say even about those who have wronged you.

2.      Feel the emotions of your adversary, the person with whom, at present, you are unable to reconcile. Recognize that you also could act in such a way, and enter into their pain.

3.      Act in a way that promotes harmony and makes restoration possible. Resist the temptation to get even, gossip, or throw criticism toward the offender. Remember the goal is to “live at peace with everyone,” even those who have wronged us.

Recall again the warning: “Bitterness is like drinking poison and expecting your enemy to die!” Of course, the poison hurts you, not the one whom you hate. (p. 167)
