COMMENTARY:

DAILY SPIRITUAL BREAKFAST: Young Believers

: 1        Paul, an apostle of Jesus Christ by the will of God, according to the promise of life which is in Christ Jesus (1860 “promise” [epaggelia] means message, announcement, agreement, offer, profession, or pledge)

DEVOTION:  Paul knows his calling is to be an apostle of Jesus Christ. He received his call to this profession on the Damascus road. He was trained in the wilderness for three years which was an extension of his training at the feet of one of the greatest Jewish instructors.

He knew that he was in the will of God as he presented himself to the apostles and they confirmed his appointment to be a missionary to the Gentles.

What was his message? It was a message of life in Jesus Christ. He spread the gospel which was the death, burial and resurrection of Jesus Christ. Jesus conquered death. Jesus offered eternal life to all those who believed. The Father accepted HIS sacrifice on the cross for the sins of the world. Paul offered this message of salvation to all those who would listen.

Many refused to follow Christ but some did. They were offered eternal life. It was something that Jesus had stated and HE always kept HIS word. No person of the Godhead ever lied.

So we know that new life is given, through Jesus Christ, to all who believe. Remember it there is only one way to heaven. Remember that every believer receives a gift of the Holy Spirit to serve the LORD in their lifetime. Remember that we have hope that no one else has through Jesus Christ. Also, remember that we have a message to share with the nations.

CHALLENGE: Paul never stopped serving Jesus until the day he died. He was doing the will of God. We need to use our gift in the same manner for the same time period.

DAILY SPIRITUAL LUNCH: Transitional Believers

: 5        When I call to remembrance the unfeigned faith that is in you, which dwelt first in your grandmother Lois, and your mother Eunice; and I am persuaded that in you also. (505 “unfeigned” [anupokritos] means genuine, without hypocrisy, not pretended, sincerely felt or expressed, irrevocable, or true)

DEVOTION:  One of the keys to training children is to present the gospel. When they are young they can understand more than we think. Jesus told the disciples that they had to become as little children. Little children trust easier than adults. They can accept things by faith.

Here we have a mother and grandmother teaching Timothy about Jesus. It is thought that Timothy’s father was a Gentile and not a believer. So here we have two women training Timothy in the faith.

Along comes Paul and recognizes his faith and takes him under his wing and trains him to be a missionary/pastor. This was the gift the LORD had given Timothy through the ministry of the Holy Spirit which was recognized by Paul and others.

Starting at an early age is important. Training following a person’s trust in the LORD is vital to their spiritual growth. It was not just leading him to a saving knowledge of the LORD it was following it up with more training.

Family evangelism is very important to the furtherance of the message of Christ. Reach many young people for the LORD. Summer programs are necessary to opening homes to hear the good news of the gospel. Invite those in your neighborhood to join you at the church each Sunday.

CHALLENGE:  Be an evangelist in your home and your neighborhood. There might be a Timothy waiting!!!

: 7        For God has not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind. (4995 “sound mind” [sophronismos] means self-discipline, moderation, sensibility, sound judgment, self-control, or prudence)

DEVOTION:  I have found this verse to be very important in training others to serve the LORD. Paul trained Timothy to serve the LORD. He wrote this verse under the ministry of the Holy Spirit to encourage Timothy to not be afraid or timid when he was witnessing for the LORD. We need the same encouragement.

It is easy to not say anything to anyone about the LORD. It is very hard to open a conversation about the LORD. The Holy Spirit is the ONE who instructs us to reach out to others with the message of salvation.

Now if we are not to be timid what are we supposed to be thinking? We are supposed to be thinking that we have power or dynamite available to us to speak the truth in love. The Holy Spirit will give us the opening. We just have to let HIM give us the power to open our mouth.

Remember we are supposed to present the truth of the Word of God in love. We are not to dislike those we are witnessing to about the LORD. We should be motivated by love for their eternal salvation.

Finally, we are supposed to be individuals who have studied the Word of God to the point that we have meditated on it and it has become a part of us. The Holy Spirit will bring back to our memory the things we have learned and the verses we have memorized. We have to be a yielded vessel for HIS use.

Witnessing is not easy but it commanded and we have the power to do it. We should and can have the love to do it. We should and can have the sound mind to do it.

CHALLENGE:  What are we waiting for? The invitation has been given. Go into all of your world and present the gospel to everyone we meet under the direction and guidance of the Holy Spirit.

DAILY SPIRITUAL SUPPER: Mature Believers

: 12      For the which cause I also suffer these things: nevertheless I am not ashamed: for I know whom I have believed, and am persuaded that he is able to keep that which I have committed unto him against that day.

(3866 “committed” [paratheke] means a deposit, a trust or thing consigned to one’s faithful keeping, or property entrusted to another.)

DEVOTION:  Paul was in prison. He is writing this second letter to Timothy to encourage him in the ministry. He gives a testimony of how Timothy was raised by his mother and grandmother to love the LORD. Tradition informs us that he had a Greek father who was not a believer.

Paul wants him to stir up the give that he received of the LORD and that was witnessed to by the laying on of hand by Paul. It seems that there was a little fear in the heart of Timothy that needed to be removed. Paul was reminding him (and us) that God has not given us a spirit of fear BUT of POWER, LOVE and A SOUND MIND. Remember that all believers have the mind of Christ available.

Paul was always being confronted by those who didn’t like the gospel of Christ preached. Paul was given the responsibility to reach the Gentiles for Christ. He was appointed by God to be a preacher and an apostle and a teacher. His first message is the gospel of Jesus Christ because he witnessed an appearance of Christ firsthand. He also taught each believer how to grow in the LORD. He did not leave town until he had given them at least a basic understanding of the Christian life.

He believed that the LORD would honor his message and work. He was not ashamed of the message he was preaching and because of that he was suffering for the LORD. Even while suffering he realized that the LORD was going to honor the deposit he made in the faith of those who believed. He was looking forward to the rewards that were going to be passed out at the Judgment Seat of Christ.

Many people worked with him but some worked against him. Some of the people working against him claimed to be followers of Christ. It was hurtful to Paul to see this happen. However, Paul always kept preaching the Word. He didn’t let anyone or anything stop him from spreading the Word of God.

We need to follow that example. Paul had made a deposit of his soul with God and he depended on God to keep it until HIS return. We [those who have made a personal commitment to HIM] have made a deposit of our soul to God for HIM to keep until HIS return. A part of us is already in heaven with HIM. Our citizenship is in heaven. It is guaranteed by the death of Christ. There is a day coming when Christ will return for HIS own people. We are part of that group.

CHALLENGE: Until that day we need to continually make deposits in our account with the LORD. What are we going to deposit today?

:16       The Lord give mercy to the house of Onesiphorus; for he oft refreshed me, and was not ashamed of my chain. (404 “refreshed” [anapsucho] means 1 to cool again, to cool off, recover from the effects of heat. 1a to refresh (one’s spirit). 2 to recover breath, take the air, cool off, revive, refresh one’s self. [Strong, J. (1995). Enhanced Strong’s Lexicon. Woodside Bible Fellowship])

DEVOTION:  There is more than one way to refresh someone else.  The commonest association with refreshment is physical refreshment.  Just providing someone a good meal and a place to sleep can be very physically refreshing, a way to show the kind of hospitality that our homes should be known for.

But there is also spiritual and emotional refreshment.  Sometimes people just need an opportunity to unload some of their problems onto someone else.  Our homes become a “safe haven” for people to talk about their lives and how God is at work.  Sometimes just talking about Scripture and the promises of God is a way to refresh people despite the pressures of everyday life.

Onesiphorus was one who Paul cites as refreshing him while he was in captivity in Rome.  Part of Onesiphorus’ ministry was simply not being ashamed of Paul as he was in prison.  So he visited Paul, more than once, as Paul awaited what would be the end of his life.  Onesiphorus was one who was not ashamed to be called a Christian, and was very aware that Paul’s fate could soon also be his.

Sometimes demonstrating this kind of hospitality is costly, not the least of all because of the inconvenience.  Sometimes it is costly to do so because identifying with someone else’s suffering is humbling because we choose to identify with the cause of their suffering as was the case with Onesiphorus in this verse.  In any case, we are called to be hospitable to those who are of the household of faith.

CHALLENGE:  What are you doing right now to help someone who is going through a difficult time?  It might be a problem with health, family, or finances, or it might even be a spiritual problem.  Ask God to show you who He wants you to come alongside today and refresh.

QUOTES regarding passage

14 Timothy was to “guard the good deposit” (“that was entrusted to you” is not in the Greek, but implied). This was evidently the gospel that Paul had entrusted to Timothy to preach and the doctrine he was to preserve. How could he do this? Only “with the help of the Holy Spirit who lives in us.” It has been well said that the Holy Spirit is the great Conservator of orthodoxy. (See note on v. 12 for parathēkē, “deposit.”) (Earle, R. (1981). 2 Timothy. In F. E. Gaebelein (Ed.), The Expositor’s Bible Commentary: Ephesians through Philemon (Vol. 11, p. 397). Grand Rapids, MI: Zondervan Publishing House)

1:14. Paul used the notion of a “trust” (parathēkēn; cf. 1 Tim. 5:21; 6:20) in two ways in the Pastorals. First, he had been given a trust or stewardship from God (cf. 1 Tim. 1:11); second, he had in turn entrusted himself and his destiny to God (2 Tim. 1:12). Here Paul spoke of the first of these two. The stewardship of the truth he had received had now been passed along into the hands of Timothy, who was to pass it on yet again to other faithful Christians, who were to pass it on to still others (2:2). While it was in Timothy’s possession, however, he was to guard (phylaxon; cf. 1 Tim. 5:21; 6:20) it with the help of the Holy Spirit who lives in us. It was Timothy’s responsibility to preserve sound teaching from becoming corrupted through distortion, dilution, deletion, and addition. Heretical teaching was not only a possibility to Paul; it was a constant threat to be guarded against. Moreover, Timothy could count on the assistance of the indwelling Spirit of God (cf. 1 John 3:24; 4:13) who desires to promote the truth about Christ (John 16:13). (Litfin, A. D. (1985). 2 Timothy. In J. F. Walvoord & R. B. Zuck (Eds.), The Bible Knowledge Commentary: An Exposition of the Scriptures (Vol. 2, p. 751). Wheaton, IL: Victor Books.)

Be loyal to God’s Word (vv. 13–14). God had given the deposit of spiritual truth to Paul (1 Tim. 1:11), and he had given it to Timothy (1 Tim. 6:20). It was now Timothy’s solemn responsibility to “hold fast” (2 Tim. 1:13) and “guard” (2 Tim. 1:14, niv) the precious deposit of Christian truth, and to pass it along to others (2 Tim. 2:2).

The word form (2 Tim. 1:13) means “a pattern, an architect’s sketch.” There was a definite outline of doctrine in the early church, a standard by which teaching was tested. If Timothy changed this outline or abandoned it, then he would have nothing by which to test other teachers and preachers. We today need to hold fast to what Paul taught for the same reason.

However, note that Timothy’s orthodoxy was to be tempered with “faith and love.” “Speaking the truth in love” (Eph. 4:15) is the divine pattern. How easy it is to become pugnacious in our desire to defend the faith, or a witch-hunter who creates problems.

It was the Holy Spirit who committed the truth to Timothy, and He would help him guard it. Apart from the ministry of the Spirit, we are in the dark when it comes to understanding the Word of God. It is He who must teach us (John 16:13) and enable us to guard the truth and share it with others.

From the beginning of human history, Satan has opposed God’s Word. “Yea, hath God said?” was Satan’s first word to mankind (Gen. 3:1), and he continues to ask that question. Throughout the history of the church, the Word of God has been attacked, often by people within the church; yet it still stands today. Why? Because dedicated men and women have (like Paul and Timothy) guarded the deposit and faithfully handed it to a new generation of Christians. When a church or any other Christian organization goes liberal, it usually starts with a weakening of their leaders’ convictions about the Word of God. (Wiersbe, W. W. (1996). The Bible exposition commentary (Vol. 2, p. 243). Wheaton, IL: Victor Books.)

Ver. 14. That good thing which was committed to thee, &c.] By which he means either his ministerial work and office, which is a good work, the dispensation of which was committed to him, and which it became him so to observe, as that the ministry might not be blamed; or else the good and excellent gifts of the spirit, which qualified him for the discharge of that work, and which were not to be neglected, but to be stirred up, exercised, and improved, lest they should be lost, or took away; or rather the Gospel, which was committed to his trust, to preach: and this may be called a good thing, from the author of it, who is good, whence it is named the Gospel of God, and the Gospel of Christ; and from the matter of it, it consists of good things come by Christ, the High-priest, and which it publishes, such as peace, pardon, righteousness, and eternal salvation by him; and from the end and use of it, it being both for the glory of God, the magnifying the riches of his grace, and the exaltation of Christ; and also is the power of God in regeneration and sanctification unto salvation to every one that believes. And it being said to be committed to Timothy, denotes the excellency of it; that it is a treasure, as indeed it is a rich one, it contains the riches of grace, even the unsearchable riches of Christ, and is more valuable than thousands of gold and silver; and that it is a trust, and requires faithfulness in ministers, who are the stewards of it; and that it is to be accounted for. Wherefore great care should be had in dispensing and keeping it: keep by the Holy Ghost. It should be kept pure and uncorrupt, free from all the adulterations and mixtures of men; and safe and sound, that it be not snatched away from the churches by false teachers. And whereas the apostle knew, that neither Timothy, nor any other, were sufficient of themselves, for these things, he directs to the keeping of it by the Holy Ghost; who makes men overseers of churches, bestows gifts upon them, to fit them for their work, and leads them into all the truths of the Gospel; and under his influence and teachings, and by the assistance of his grace, are they enabled to discharge their trust, abide by the Gospel, and persevere in the ministration of it to the end. Which dwelleth in us; in all believers, who are the temples of the Holy Ghost; and in all the churches, which are built up by him, an habitation for God; and in all the ministers of the word, to direct, instruct, support, and uphold them; and who dwells with them, and continues in them, and that for ever, John 14:16, 17. (Gill, J. (1809). An Exposition of the New Testament (Vol. 3, pp. 321–322). London: Mathews and Leigh.)

The apostle’s teaching set the standard for Timothy both in terms of its content and communication (v.13). the same is true for all who teach. Apostolic doctrine provides the outline, Jesus Christ supplies the ethos. Possession of truth is a sacred trust. God’s servant must rely on the help of the Holy Spirit who dwells in us (v. 14). Indwelling indicates control.

FROM MY READING:

(Remember the only author that I totally agree with is the HOLY SPIRIT in the inerrant WORD OF GOD called THE BIBLE! All other I try to gleam what I can to help me grow in the LORD!!)

Timothy was discouraged and needed to “rekindle, stir into flame, keep blazing”(A. T. Robertson, Word Pictures of the New Testament) in ministry for Christ. ….

Paul challenges Timothy anew, reminding him God has not given us the spirit of cowardice, fear, or timidity; but of power, love, and “self-discipline, the power to keep onself in hand” (Cleon Rogers Jr. AND Cleon Rogers III, The New Linguistic and Exegetical Key to the Greek New Testament).  (October 24 Living The New Testament  by Paul Enns)

It is obedience to God that is central to leadership.

An Early Confession
“And without controversy great is the mystery of godliness: God was manifest in the flesh, justified in the Spirit, seen of angels, preached unto the Gentiles, believed on in the world, received up into glory.” (1 Timothy 3:16)
One of the specific reasons Paul wrote this letter to Timothy is contained in our text. The church is to guard and declare the “mystery of godliness.”
A “mystery” in Scripture is something that was previously hidden but that is now revealed. Here the mystery is the blessed truth that God is in the business of producing godliness in the lives of men and women; in this context, it is through the work of the church (v. 15). This ministry of the church in proclaiming this mystery was augmented by a doctrinal confession, or hymn, which was presented in:
“God was manifest in the flesh, justified in the Spirit.” “The Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us” (John 1:14), and was “declared to be the Son of God with power, according to the Spirit of holiness” (Romans 1:4). This couplet relates Christ’s human/divine nature. His humanity was evident to all; His divinity was declared through the Spirit.
“Seen of angels, preached unto the Gentiles” (or nations). Angels observed, and to some degree participated in, Christ’s earthly ministry, but the salvation and godliness He offered was only to men, “which things the angels desire to look into” (1 Peter 1:12).
“Believed on in the world, received up into glory.” Other teachers have gained a following, but only Christ ascended directly into heaven following His resurrection. Doctrinal confessions or hymns can be an aid in learning and remembering truth, but the goal of each is godliness— “this mystery among the Gentiles; which is Christ in you” (Colossians 1:27). Mark 13

Jesus responds to His disciples’ questions regarding His future coming.

INSIGHT

To the world, the idea of Jesus returning in history to judge His enemies and reward His friends is a joke.

“Come down out of the clouds,” people say, “and spend your time thinking about what you can do right here and now.”

Though the world doesn’t take the doctrine of the Second Coming seriously, the Bible places great emphasis on the teaching. Christians, then, need to take it seriously as well. Twice in Mark 13 Jesus warns, “Be on the alert!” Properly understood, awaiting Christ’s return should help us live righteously as we do God’s work in this world. (Quiet Walk)

CHRIST IN US

Know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you?
1 Corinthians 6:19
The New Testament tells me that Christ is in me, and I am meant to live a life of constant fellowship and communion with Him. Sin is to look away from Him, to be interested in anything that the world can give rather than in Him. Oh, if it is something foul it is ten times worse; but the best that the world can give me is an insult to Him if I put it before Him.
There are endless statements of this. Paul puts it in terms of the Holy Spirit: “Know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you?” (1 Corinthians 6:19). The argument is about fornication and adultery. Paul does not merely give a moral lecture on immorality; he says in effect, “What is wrong about that is that you are joining your body, which is a temple of the Holy Spirit, to another, and you have no right to do it. The way to overcome that sin is not to pray so much that you may be delivered from it; it is to realize that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit and that you have no right to use it in that way.” Another way he puts it is this and it is very tender: “Grieve not the Holy Spirit of God” (Ephesians 4:30). He is tender, He is sensitive, He is holy; do not grieve Him.
If you and I would only think of our lives like that, it would very soon begin to promote our sanctification. May I commend to you a simple morning rule: When you wake up, the first thing you should do (and I need to do the same) is to say to yourself, “I am a child of God. Christ is in me. That old self is gone: I died with Christ. ‘I live; yet not I, but Christ lives in me.’ Everything I do today must be in the light of this knowledge.”
A Thought to Ponder: The Holy Spirit is tender, He is sensitive, He is holy; do not grieve Him. (From Sanctified Through the Truth, pp. 135-136, by Dr. Martyn Lloyd-Jones)
